Folding Chairs Sinking into the Grass?

charms88, on July 18, 2018 at 10:46 PM Posted in Planning 1 10
Our ceremony is in a small butterfly garden, the garden doesn't have benches or pews built into it so we will have to bring chairs.

So my parents are borrowing chairs from their church to use for seating for the ceremony. They are metal folding chairs with round supports.

My dad brought up the concern of the chairs sinking into the grass and to prevent any sinking, he wants to lay down some plywood over the grass and set the chairs on top of that.

I really don't like the idea of placing plywood just for the sake of not having the chairs sink. I worry setting down the plywood will only damage the grass and honestly, I think it will look trashy.

But is my Dad right to worry about the folding chairs sinking into the grass? I agree they might sink a little, but I don't think we have to worry about anyone not being able to get up out of their chairs.

August here is usually very dry, and even if it rains, we've arranged to move our ceremony indoors, so I really don't think the chairs will have any trouble.

Anyone have a similar issue with chairs sinking into the grass? Was it really that much of a problem or did you wish that you had put more thought into making sure the chairs didn't sink?

In all the outdoor weddings I've attended, I've never notice a problem with chairs sinking into the ground unless the ground was soaked from a recent rain.

    That's what I figured.

Unless there's been a lot of rain over the last few days, we should be just fine.

I’m right there with you on a big no for the plywood!!

I’ve been to loads of outdoor events with folding chairs and I’ve never seen an issue with them sinking in. Maybe if you have a guest that is very, very heavy and the ground is wet..but even in this case I would worry about them not being comfortable in the chair period before I worried about the legs sinking in.

I say you are fine and have nothing to worry about here 🙂

Thanks! Thankfully not every chair will be in the grass - there's a shaded patio area where we can put chairs if people are uncomfortable in the folding chairs in the grass.

It really means a lot to me that we're getting to have our wedding there - it's a public garden that was built when I was just a child. It's always been a very beautiful place and I don't think there has been a wedding ceremony there yet, so I am excited our wedding might possibly be the first!

If anything you could buy some small plastic furniture pucks for underneath the chairs.

I agree the chairs should be fine unless it pours for days prior to your wedding. I would also guess the venue will NOT allow you to put anything down on the grass, as it will likely cause significant damage. The local outdoor venue we frequent a lot for concerts and picnics doesn't even allow visitors to put down any kind of tarps (e.g., canvas painters or blue resistant, etc.) as they can kill the grass.

Do you have a link to an example product? I have tried searching, but nothing that looks like it's designed to keep chairs from sinking is showing up.
