Flying with wedding dress

el10717, on August 30, 2017 at 2:38 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20

I will be flying with my lace wedding dress for our DW. I'm just wondering if anyone has any tips for getting through the airport/onto the plane as well as suggestions for packaging my dress. I plan to get an actual garment bag that will be much sturdier than the one it came in but beyond that I have not given it much though.

I should add that we are flying Southwest and from my online research I will have to put it into the overhead storage as they do not have closets with space to hang it.

After talking with several people about this (Since I have to do the same thing haha) I've heard stuffing it in the garment bag and sticking it in a carry on is the best method mostly because like as you said most airlines don't have the closet option anymore and you don't wanna be stressed about possibly losing your bag if you checked your wedding dress. My bridal consultant was the one that told me this is the least nerve racking when it comes to traveling your wedding dress. This way you only have to steam it when you get to your destination and you know for sure it will arrive with you.

Happy Traveling and Congrats on the upcoming wedding!

I've been wondering the same thing myself. A friend suggested FedEx which I promptly shot down. I'm hoping it fits into carry on luggage as that is my plan.

We flew to Jamaica last year via southwest for my friends DW. She did a garment bag, carried it on and used the overhead bin.

When I flew with my wedding dress I put it in a garment back and then folded the garment bag into one of the smaller roller suitcases that fit in the overhead compartments. It worked well for me.

Flew overseas with it in a garment bag in a carry-on suitcase. Although...I had those silicone stick on bra things packed in the same suitcase. Those things ALWAYS cause the bag to be flagged for a visual check and I had forgotten about it. So I had to take out the garment bag at the airport and stuff it all back in afterwards.

You guys are amazing! I never thought about tucking it into a suitcase. That would work great. Now to find someone who can steam it for me... lol

I've done this before. I flew with a big taffeta ball gown to my brother's wedding a few years ago. I used its garment bag and flew with it as a carry on. I asked the flight attendant if they could hook it up to where people hang their coats and such. They were more than happy too. When I got to my hotel room I just took it out of the garment bag, hung it, and let it "air out" the wrinkles. It was totally fine.

The shop I got my dress at told me to bring in a carry on bag and they would package it for me to fit that way it was with me on the flight

I flew to Australia with my wedding dress and it was damaged by the flight attendants man handling it. So stressful! I had to find a seamstress to repair the dress the day of the wedding. I would suggest putting it in a heavy duty garment bag and then a carry on suitcase. Don't count on closet space.

I hadn't thought about this! I was just thinking about flying with it, inside garment bag, on hand. I might do the carry on thing.

For a second I thought you would be flying IN your wedding dress... what a mess that would be! Lol I pictured someone running through the airport in a big lacy ballgown.

Im also flying Southwest to my wedding. Garment bag put in a carry on suitcase is gonna be my method as well. I don't want to worry about stuffing it into the overhead compartment on top of bags and all that.

Roll your dress - don't fold it! This way it doesn't crease.

I rolled mine in the garment bag and put into a carryon. It was too long to just carry in the garment bag as is. Mine is lace, tulle, with satin underlayers. If you take it out and hang it as soon as you get there it should be fine. Ask the hotel about a steamer if needed.

On amazon they have these acid free wedding dress travel boxes that apparently are magic! I am considering one for my overseas part of my wedding (family religious ceremony in England) and so need it to travel well for many hours! I am flying delta and hopefully first class mostly so that I can put my dress in the first class closet in a garment bag, but if budget doesn't allow for that then the box it is. It's by fosters and Stevens but it's the best one and worth the price according to all the research I've done online.

I put mine in my rolling bag and it was the only item in the bag. It allowed me to carry it on, with the cardboard bust form. Thankfully my dress was tulle so wrinkles fell out in the month it was at my parents. The garment bag in the hard case small roller is prob your best bet, otherwise you run the possibility of other fliers of shoving the garment bag, squishing it etc.

I've researched this and ur suggests have been right on. I even looked on YouTube and they had different people showing you how to properly fold and pack them. I was going to do the garment bag thing as a carry on but think I will do the roll up into a carry on preferably a hard one. Thanks for the info
