Flying With Dress

Sexypoodle, on September 18, 2021 at 11:23 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 2 9

For past brides who have flown with their dress, how did that work out? -OR- For upcoming brides who need to fly with their dress, what is your plan? Also, did you/will you have your dress steamed again when you arrive at your destination?

We recently canceled our local wedding plans and decided to elope in Hawaii instead. However, the need to fly 6 hours with my dress only now just crossed my mind 🤔 Since we’re getting married on the beach, my dress is a fitted/sheath sheath style. So it’s not puffy at all. There’s usually no space above the luggage in the overhead bins to lay a dress down (even if folded in half). So I’m wondering how other brides are handling this.

My gown was a ball gown. I bought a large garment bag on Amazon that could be buckled into a carry-on size and used that as one of my two carry-ons.
I did have a steamer come to our hotel the morning of the wedding to do my gown, my veil and my husband’s tux.

Never flew with a wedding dress but I did fly with expensive dance costumes. I ALWAYS took them as carry on, never ever checked. There is often a coat closet for the crew and they were usually very kind enough to allow us to use it. One time after a difficult landing, we saw my tutus being carried in to the terminal and kept safe by the pilot until we could collect! Flight staff are usually very accommodating and helpful.

Thank you! I read about the flight attendants’ coat closet. But didn’t know if it was a viable option. It’s my belief (or hope) that most people would be pretty accommodating to brides when it comes to something like this.

I also thought of putting the garment bag into my carry-on and fold it. However, I had a few other wedding items that I planned to transport in my carry-on bag as well. However, my dress might actually serve as a good “cushion” for the other items in the bag. So I think that might be the route I take. Given that, I’ll definitely arrange for the dress to receive another steaming when I arrive. Thanks!!!

Seems like the easiest plan (or at least the most guaranteed plan with less hassle)

I’ve read in another post that some airlines have coat closets/hangers. Call your airlines and explain your situation and she how they can help.

OMG! We were SO freaking lucky!!! 😆😆😆 Our flights to (and from) Hawaii were only a little over halfway full. So everyone was able to stretch out and have their own row if they wanted to (and that’s what DH and I did, sitting across the aisle from one another and getting rest). The flight attendants made sure that we spread throughout the plane to keep it balanced. As a result, I had an entire overhead bin to myself and easily put my dress in there. What are the chances of that? Lol!!! But, it was the end of October and with Hawaii having restrictions, I can see why the plane wasn’t full. Also, with everything we’d been through with the wedding, and empty flight was a welcomed relief. As we were about to land, I moved over and sat near DH to enjoy the beautiful views.

So, since we got lucky, I don’t have much advice on traveling with a wedding gown. But I was prepared to ask about a closet. My other plan was that I would take up a bin and hope that no one would complain . I found that when you’re walking around the airport with a wedding gown, people are very nice and accommodating 😊

I can’t believe it’s been almost 2 months already. I will have to take some time and post BAM with a few fav wedding pics.
