Flying with ballgown?

Maria, on January 7, 2018 at 1:57 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

Couldn't help it. Fell in love with a ballgown. It's not the kind of dress that stands up by itself like Marie Antoinette or Scarlett O'Hara (I'm not sure if I'm supposed to add some sort of undergarment for an extra poof) but it's still way more ballgown than A-line. I'm pretty sure I can put it in a garment bag. I'd have to double check though.

I want to book my flight for the wedding/honeymoon in Puerto Rico and I'm trying to research how to fly with my dress. I've seen plenty of articles but the advice is still vague for me. I'm trying to tell myself that thousands of brides manage this every year.

Please tell me your experience. Which airline? Horror story or success?

I know I need to call and ask. Is there another department besides customer service that would handle a question like this?

I didn’t have a ball gown, but I flew with my dress. I flew American Airlines, and called customer service a head of time. They suggested I fly priority, but even still not every air plane has a hanging closet. I had no issues with TSA, but I did read if your dress doesn’t fit through the X-ray they will have to open the bag and check it by hand. Obviously if that was the case, I’d make sure they put brand new clean gloves on, and send my husband first so he hopefully didn’t see it. When we got to the gate, I told the attendant at the desk that I was flying with my wedding dress, and she let the flight attendants know. Once I boarded they tried to hang it but it didn’t fit so we had to lay it over head and they laid it over our bags and closed the over head so no one else could put bags in that space. Also make sure there is some place at the hotel you can have it steamed. I took my dress right to the cleaners to be re - steamed.

Do not check it! I wouldn't mess with the closet. I'd put it in the overhead in a big duffle bag

Definitely don't check it. For my first wedding we flew to Las Vegas and the bag with my veil and accessories got delayed. I was freaking out so I was glad we came in early since it took a day to be reunited with that stuff.

It's not really a big deal. Put it in a safe bag, lay it on top of stuff in the overhead bins (usually the closet is for first class only), and it'll be OK.

I have a ballgown and that thing weighs at least 20 pounds. I would not want to lug it on a plane! Good luck!

Thanks that’s definitely stuck in my memory. Both Delta and AA delayed my bags in the past 2 years. It’s so stressful.

Your welcome! Good luck! Also like everyone else, I wouldn’t check anything you need to the day of, I carried on all my accessories, shoes, undergarments, and husbands stuff, I was not taking that chance!

Thank you! I always put less important things in my checked bags and I still cry with anxiety when my bag gets delayed.

This is exactly what they told me to do at the dress shop. I was a little nervous but I'm so glad to know it worked!!! Mine is A-line so hopefully doesn't take up too much room!

I just finished reading this thread. I have yet to buy my dress...... I will start shopping for my dress in about 6 weeks. I'm keeping in mind traveling with the dress before I decide on a silhouette.

    I'm having a destination wedding.

What are your thoughts (or what was your experiences) on putting a gown in a space bag for travel?
