Flying first class upgrade for honeymoon & newlyweds

Susan, on August 8, 2019 at 1:44 PM Posted in Honeymoon 1 14
We are flying to FL for our wedding and honeymoon. Has anyone tried to get a complementary upgrade to first class when flying on their honeymoon? Did it work for? Is that just in the tv/movies? 😂 I need to know what my odds are here. Also, our airline actually rescheduled one of our flights delaying our original itinerary by 4 hours, so maybe the will be more accommodating, idk?

We flew Southwest so they don't do first class but we did get a bottle of champagne on our flight! And they announced it. It's worth letting them know or wearing "honeymoon" themed shirts just to see. We got a few free desserts & drinks throughout our trip, but no major upgrades.

Flights are usually fully booked nowadays. Upgrading to first class is a long shot, those tickets are $500-$1,000+ more than economy. The airline is not just going to upgrade you for free. You can ask customer service for any upgrades at the gate but they will likely charge you for even moving to an emergency exit row for more leg room. The most I would expect to get for free is an announcement on the plane, and maybe a complimentary drink.

This apparently worked for my SIL years ago! She "casually" mentioned they were heading to their honeymoon and showed the agent a wedding photo at check-in. They got upgraded.

Yeah up to first class I wouldn't bank on it but MAYBE premium? They usually put MVPs into 1st class first. If you go up to the counter sometimes they let you upgrade for like $150.

We flew from FL to Mexico for our wedding with wedding dress and 5 luggage’s. American Airlines wasn’t much accommodating with my bags at check in. I even cry (bawling) when I had to send one of my carry on thru the bottom since they consider my dress a “carry on.” I tried getting first class by paying for it to avoid sending the carry on (because it had fragile and valuables) and not even that worked. I did have priority so I had certain privilege like free alcohol, priority boarding, better seats but that’s all. The crew at the plane was very accommodating with my dress and I was thankful for that. Good luck trying to get a complimentary upgrade! The most I ever gotten complimentary is exit seat with more legroom but maybe you get lucky!

I would think getting a seat with extra leg room is more realistic than first class. My dad is executive platinum and sometimes doesn’t even get upgraded to first class because the upgrade list always has so many people.

We didn't get a first class upgrade, but we did get a bottle of champagne because I wore my "bride" shirt on the plane.

I agree that this is highly unlikely, not only are most flights booked and/or the staff isn't even allowed to offer such an expensive upgrade. Also, honeymooners fly every day. The staff probably sees couples and gets requests all the time. It isn't special to them.

I'd say your best bet is to politely and nonchalantly mention you're headed to your honeymoon in passing. Also, be extremely nice, polite, and gracious! I think straight up asking for anything will result in nothing. People are happier to supply something for people they like that aren't expecting anything.

I didn't think they even did anything at all, so it's nice to hear some of you got champagne and stuff. Thanks for all the input!

We definitely aren't expecting anything and I wasnt planning on just asking straight up. I just wanted to know if it was even worth a mention, but seems like it is, so we'll see how it goes! Thanks Smiley smile

Sorry if I sounded rude- it can be hard to not sound harsh over text! I didn't mean to imply you were, simply advice I've seen from past threads and discussions. I'd definitely mention it, best of luck! 😊

It wouldn't be a free upgrade but if you download the airlines app and watch their paid upgrade section there are good deals that pop up before the flight (depending on airline). I once upgraded to first class on a 8 hour United flight for $100, and it was a lay flat pod!

If we wouldn't have upgraded our flights on our own I certainly would have tried! FH is the type that doesn't like to draw attention to himself and will just pay for whatever. We used miles the initial flights so to upgrade to Business Class it was an additional $900. However, I made all the hotel reservations and made sure to mention we will be on our honeymoon to we'll see!

Aha I thought about it but we didn't do that. also because I don't know how we would have brought up randomly like "we are newlyweds" aha so we just didn't bring it up at all. But I totally joked about trying to.
