Fly in an officiant?

Tayja, on May 7, 2018 at 11:25 PM Posted in Planning 0 7
Has anyone here brought in an officiant? My fiancé is from California and would love to bring his rabbi here to Oregon for the ceremony. We are planning on paying her airfare and also accommodations (and inviting her to stay for the reception of course!) on top of her regular officiant fee. Does this seem fair? Should we also offer to help her with a rental car or other costs associated with an out of town trip?
We’re just getting started planning so we haven’t actually asked her yet. But I’m defintely wondering if this is an unusual ask and what would make it fair, if anyone else has helpful info I’m all ears!
Thanks!

Remember to check legislation in Oregon to ensure that she can legally officiate.

We live in FL but getting married in NC and we are having my FHs priest officiate. We asked him what he usually requests. So far I believe (i say that bc FH parents offered to pay) we are getting him the flight and accommodations. Also he asks for a "donation" to the church..as opposed to a fee that goes directly to him. I would ask her what she typically receives or requests and then go from there. Usually, like other vendors, they have set guidelines as to what they require.

Okay, that sounds good—glad you are doing flight and accommodations too! Glad our thinking of what to cover is on the right track!

FH wanted is his childhood rabbi, who lives in Pittsburgh, to officiate our wedding in Washington DC. The rabbi's son lives in Washington DC also, so the rabbi and his wife will be driving up the day of the wedding on his own (but we were willing to pay for his flights or hire a driver). But we will be paying for his gas and hotel room, in addition to a donation to the synagogue.

I think happens often and I've seen in a couple of times in my family. You just need to have discussion with this person and see what would be required. I do think you should probably be prepared to pay for all the travel expenses (air, hotel, car) for this person as well as an officiant fee.
