Flute Piano Duet Suggestions

Kelly, on January 23, 2023 at 7:43 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 11

I'd like for my mom (flute) and piano teacher to play a duet together (or several) at the ceremony. Any suggestions? Also, when should I have them play? I want to be able to hear it.

Does your mom have a role during the ceremony? I ask because I was thinking back to when I was in HS and my mom remarried. She had myself and some friends play as a string quartet. We played some general relaxing music in the beginning while people were coming in and then it turned into a trio for the procession because I was the MoH and had to walk down the aisle lol. So if she is in the ceremony, that could be an idea. OR have the other musicians playing before/during, and then she joins them for your recessional? What songs are you thinking of having played?

She doesn't have role, but that's a good point. I'm processing to Rondeau et Fanfares by Mouret. Some other music I'm considering: Quatre Variations sur un Theme by Bitsch, Water Music (Handel), Trumpet Concertino in C Major by Bozza, Sonata in G Major by Scarlatti. There are more I'm considering, but these are the top choices.

My friend had some musicians, I think violin and piano, they played prior to the ceremony and all the ceremony music. She barely was able to hear and enjoy it though. You said you wanted to hear it, and the ceremony is a great idea for them to play, I'm just not sure how much you'd be hearing.

That's interesting. Do you know why she couldn't hear it? We'll be in a smallish room with good acoustics.

I processed to Rondeau! Great choice lol

Could you have your piano teacher do the part of the processional where your mom, bridal party, and anyone else ahead of you comes down the aisle, then your mom would be able to walk in, get set, and then the two of them could play together when you walk in?

Thanks! My mom probably won't even process, so I'm not too worried about her getting situated.

If you choose to sign the marriage certificate during the ceremony, you can have them play then. One option is "Meditation" from the opera Thais which can be a duet of piano and flute. You can also go more contemporary with Lizzo. Smiley smile Sorry, can't think of anything non-moody and contemplative that involves a flute. Btw, I recessed to Rondeau, and processed to Meditation. Good luck!

Maybe they can play when everyone is filing into the ceremony space. Let’s say your ceremony starts at 3pm. The duets can be from 2:30 -2:45. Then your mom can put her flute away and either process in to the ceremony at 3ish or just be seated (not sure what you were planning). The other thing to consider is that I heard there was a tradition that the mother of the bride was supposed to greet everyone as they arrived at the ceremony. That might be old fashioned. Anyway, best of luck with whatever you decide.

It may have just been the layout of her venue, but also just nerves and anxiety. lol The whole thing went so fast. She was in a small rounded loft room, so you think it would have been good. but could also hear people murmuring and little shuffles.

Hmm maybe. We're doing pictures before the ceremony though so that might be a bit close.

Thanks! I'll have to see if I can find sheet music for Meditation.
