Flowers

Talia, on January 20, 2020 at 8:24 AM Posted in Planning 1 13

So we got our first consultation with a florist this past weekend and was quoted around $2500. Is that normal? I'm not quite sure what the average for flowers are.

It depends what you are asking them for. Does this include bouquets, boutonnières, table centerpieces, set up and delivery? If so, that is around the average.

I added pictures of what I showed the florist. So my bouquet plus 4 for the bridesmaids. Petals for the flower girl. 6 Bouts, 4 corsages. 12 medium centerpieces. A few things for the ceremony. She didn't charge for delivery fee.

Pretty flowers! Yes, for all of that plus the fact she will be delivering it for you, I’d say that is a fair price. If you wanted to save some money, you could always cut the flower girls petals and get those elsewhere for cheaper.

I’d say for everything you’re getting that sounds very reasonable

That doesn't sound unreasonable. You can ask for an itemized estimate, that way you know where the bulk of the cost is coming from. You might find that the centerpieces you've requested are really expensive, and something like making them smaller or incorporating more greenery into all of your florals or using a different type of flower can save you a lot of money. Definitely talk with your florist about different options if you are concerned with the price.

It also doesn't hurt to reach out to a couple more florists in your area for a quote, just for comparison purposes. If you are getting similar quotes from all three florists, chances are no one is trying to screw you over, its just want the flowers cost.

We are using only in season flowers, locally grown by an organic florist, and greenery. Because our flowers are organic, they may cost a little more but we also offset the cost by using only flowers that are in season and can be grown locally and don't need to be shipped from growers elsewhere.

Ours is $3300 for ceremony, person, and reception. My goal was for floral to be lush and full. I believe this includes about 7 centerpieces, hurricane vases, pedestals, cake flowers, 5 boutineers and 4 corsages and even a few random arrangements for fillers where needed. I think that proce sounds great depending on what you requested.

Daughter's flower order sounds fairly similar to yours, except they had a larger wedding party, so more bouquets & boutonnieres, and they had a large arrangement for the arch (later used on the Sweetheart table), some cocktail centerpieces, etc. The first estimate she got was about $2700. She kept looking and found a wonderful florists who gave her everything she wanted (and more than the first estimate) for around $1700 delivered. Bottom line? She found there is a lot of variation and it definitely paid to comparison shop. She LOVED her florist and the flowers were gorgeous. (FWIW we live in SoCal, typically a very high cost area. Also, her flower choices and colors were very similar to yours! Smiley winking )

Yes were looking around for sure! Were getting an arrangement for the gazebo and later using it for our table as well. I surely don't think I'm getting screwed over as I just want roses and hydrangeas and typically I don't think they cost that much. As another poster said about using greenery, we aren't going for that look as were not a fan of it. Maybe that's why our cost is up there since we want fuller looking arrangements/bouquets/etc. I just thought it was a little steep of a price. The arrangements in my eyes are already "small" so no way of going smaller than that. We're about 30 minutes away from Philadelphia but closer to Delaware.

Definitely have to shop around. The first couple of florists we met with were very expensive. I started feeling like we wouldn't be able to do what we wanted and started planning on diy-ing centerpieces to save money. I kept looking around and meeting with florists. Finally found one that we really liked and was much more reasonable. If it's in your budget and you liked the florist go for it. If not, check out other options.

For sure. As of now I want to just DIY our centerpieces. I know how to arrange flowers. That'll cut us like 1100 from the bill but I def want to shop around.

As I remember, I think we only physically visited the two florists. She emailed or phoned others, but some of them had minimum charges that were above what she wanted to spend or sent her price lists that were clearly outside her budget, so we didn't bother talking with them further. She ended up finding her florist through the vendor tab on either WW or The Knot. She specifically looked for vendors that included info that made it clear they were willing to work within a budget. Her flower choices were identical to yours, multiple types ivory & pink of roses, with hydrangea and astilbe (the pink feathery flower in your photos). She had a small amount of seeded eucalyptus, but not a ton of greenery. Based on your photos, I think her flower order was very similar to yours -- and they were really lovely! Another option to look into, if you haven't yet considered it, is talking with the floral dept in your local grocery stores. I have a niece who ended up getting her wedding flowers through Wegman's (it's a higher-end chain in the northeast) and they were GORGEOUS and she said they were MUCH less expensive than from any other florist she talked with. Think outside the box when you're looking for more budget-friendly options. (Daughter saved more than 50% on her cake by going to a small, local, independent cupcake shop that also makes cakes, compared with the typical "wedding cake bakeries" in our area. The cake was delicious and exactly what daughter wanted for $3.75 a slice, compared with $8-10 at the "recommended bakeries.") Good luck!

I would still shop around or ask your florist to work within your budget. There are a lot of cheaper flower options out there that will achieve the same look.

I consulted with at least 5 florists before I got the one I find affordable. The average quoting for me was $4500, one place quoted me $7000. So shop around, ask your friends who got married.
