Flower girls/"personal attendants"

Chelsi, on March 27, 2016 at 6:45 AM Posted in Planning 0 27

Okay so I have two little cousins and at the time of our wedding one will be 7 and one will be 10. I was thinking of having the 7 year old be the flower girl, but know if I ask her/her parents if she can do it, her sister will be very upset that she is not involved either. The 10 year old is very outgoing and loves to talk to people, so I was thinking of having her help do the guest book and be a "personal attendant" (just giving her a couple small tasks to do So she feels included). Does this seem like a good idea? Has anyone ever had 2 flower girls? We have also thrown that idea around, but maybe thinking 10 is too old for a flower girl?

10 isn't too old to be a flower girl. I would make them both flower girls or one could be a ring princess. You can definitely have more than one FG if you want. If you don't want two flower girls, you could always have her be an usher and have her seat people. I wouldn't have her man the guest book as I feel that would interfere with her having fun during the reception.

I personally think both 7and 10 is too old for flower girls. Usually I seem them around 4/5. But if you don't have anyone else. Why not! And if you do.. I think having them hand out programs or bubbles etc is good enough. But have them both do the same thing. Wouldn't want the 10 yr old to be sad just bc she's a little older

10 is a perfect age to be a flower girl because it's the age you can be assured that the flower girl will make it to the end of the aisle. Smiley winking

7 and 10 are fine IF they want to do it. I see this all the time.

If not, they don't need to be 'included'. They're guests.

I'm having my 2 younger nieces (1 mine & 1 his) be our flower girls. My soon to be step daughter will be 9 by the time of our wedding. I've decided to make her a junior bridesmaid and have her walk in with her brother a junior groomsman, who will be 8. We will have our nephews by our ring bearers.

I'm having 5 flower girls from 2-11 yrs old. It's a big deal for kids to be in a wedding and there's no rule that says you can only have 1 or that they have to be a certain age. From experience, guest book attendant is a blah position and not on par with being a flower girl.

Years ago junior bridesmaids were in the 12-18 range and flower girls were in the 6-12 range. None of this pulling babies down the aisle in wagons and calling them flower girls thing. Many churches have age minimums, to participate anyway, which is a really sensible thing to do.

P.S. I've been singing at weddings for almost 14 years.

Why don't you have her be a junior bridesmaid? My junior bridesmaid was 9.

Nothing wrong with 2 flower girls. And contrary to what some people here think, there is no flower girl age rule. But as they get older, it's nice to ask them if they want that title. I am having 2 flower girls ages 9 and 14. And 2 Jr bridesmaids ages 14 and 16. It works for us. The FGs are our daughters and they are both excited to be flower girls. The Jr BMs are our daughter and our niece. They are going to walk with the ring bearer who will be our 2 year old nephew so he doesn't freak out. Bridal parties are whoever you want next to you to celebrate your marriage. Do what makes you happy

I would just have two flower girls to have the sisters on the same level.

I'm having two ring bearers. You can have a many or as little as you like.

10 is not too old. I would have them both be flower girls. You can ask them what they think and if they would like to do it. I would think she will still be excited at 10 years old.

Yeah, I don't know where all this "10 is too old" to be a FG thing started. I suspect it was about the time people decided that newborns could be flower girls if someone walked them down the aisle (which is ridiculous, by the way). It used to be that girls age 6-12 were ideal to be flower girls. I see no issue with both being flower girls or the older one being a ring bearer. Alternatively, you could have the 10-year-old in the bridal party as bridesmaid if you wanted. The truth is that no one likes handing out programs. Don't make her do that in hopes that she'll feel included.

I asked my grandma to be my flower girl, so 10 is definitely not too old!

I agree that putting the two girls in the same role is ideal, but not necessary. I agree with Elizabeth that no one likes to hand out programs, but if she is outgoing, then maybe an usher would be more her speed?

Definitely ask them! It could be fun!

Our 4 year old twin cousins are the flower girls and my 6 year old Goddaughter is the bell ringer.

The 10 year old could be the bell ringer.

Asking someone to be a "personal attendant," at any age is more insulting than not being included at all. It is not an honor to work for you on your wedding day, and I think even a 10-year-old will realize it.
