Flower girl/maiden age

Cassandra, on January 22, 2022 at 6:10 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 1 9
Does anyone care about the flower girl/maidens age?

*context*Pretty traditional family/wedding with some modern twists. My little sister and her 2 cousins are all the same age of 9 going on 10. Keep in mind that my family is tall, so they're all about 5'-5'3 in height.. I promised them before I even got engaged that one day the 3 of them together would be my flower girls. To make a long story short, my sister became the "princess" and my 2 cousins the flower girls. I'm NOW being told that they're too big and need to be set as junior bridesmaids. That means I'd need new flower girls... my wedding is now in 98 days. Any help?

Typically ages 4-10 have been seen as the standard for flower girls, but I think you can choose whoever you want. I’ve been to numerous weddings were a parent/friend walked an infant down (holding or in a cart) and tossed petals for them. Over the past year or two, flower grandmas and flower men have been trending on social media. We asked my fiancé’s nieces (ages 9 and 12) to be our flower girls. One of my friends asked her bridesmaid’s daughter (age 13) to be a flower girl last summer, and she was taller than most of the bridesmaids. Her brother (age 17) was their ring beater.

There is literally no age, size or sex requirement for your flower person. This is your wedding, and you can absolutely have whoever you would like fill that role! I’ve seen teenagers, little boys, grown adults of both genders and even grandmothers be flower people! If these three girls are excited about being flower girls, I would absolutely let them rock that role!

Unless it is the girls themselves asking to be junior bridesmaids I d keep them as flower girls. Recently I ve even seen flower grandmas which is just too sweet for words! As other posters have mentioned it is your wedding you can fill the roles as you see fit. Enjoy!

They’re only too old if THEY themselves think they are too old

I agree with this. A 10-year-old might not want to be treated like a little kid. I would offer her the option of being a junior bridesmaid too.

Height is irrelevant and a flowergirl is always optional. But the customary age that people are used to seeing is 3-10. They don’t have to be carried in and they’re still young enough to enjoy the role.

We're date twins! Smiley heart I have 4 flower girls, ranging from ages 3 to 8 and one junior bridesmaid who will be 12. But I really think it's up to you who you want and it shouldn't matter their age, height or anything else. One wedding I attended, the bride's grandmother was the flower girl!! So, do what you'd like...happy planning!

Thank you all for your thoughtful responses, it does put me at ease knowing I wasn't the only one thinking this. As for the people stating that it should be the girls choice since they are old enough to choose, my sister and cousins have been bragging to other family members of being flower girls. They know they're not old enough to be bridesmaids, but never posed an issue for being flower girls. My sister even states she won't be the princess but the Rockstar at my wedding 😂tenor.gif
