Flower Girl or No Flower Girl, Alternatives?

K-G, on January 24, 2015 at 12:25 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

I originally planned on asking my niece if her 3 year old would be able to play the role of flower girl...but noticed recently at family events that this little girl, who will be almost 4 by the time of the wedding, flies off the handle at any given moment, so I'm thinking this wouldn't be a good idea...but I don't have any back ups. I have an 11 year old niece but I feel that she is too old to be a flower girl. Thoughts? Alternative ideas? I am having my 5 year old nephew be the ring bearer, it's very important to FH and I to have him in the wedding. Would this be weird without the flower girl? I need suggestions!

    I had this discussion with a WP a few weeks ago. She said it's fine to have a RB without a FG (and vice versa)

    ETA: And yes, 11 is too old to be a FG.

    Truthfully, I'd rather have a ring bearer walking down the aisle alone (which looks absolutely fine, by the way) than the more traditional team of RB/FG if the FG is going to have you on pins and needles during her walk down the aisle. There's nothing like an ugly tantrum to spoil a beautiful, dignified processional.

    I think anyone can be a flower girl. There's no such thing as "too old." I think the 11-year-old would work. Have you ever seen the grandma flower girl photos? (Below)

    It's not necessary to have a flower girl. We're only having out 3 year old nephew as a ring bearer with no flower girl.

    Its not necessary. We won't be having a flower girl or ring bearer.

    @Emma I love that!

    Couldn't she just hold a sign or a pinwheel or something? She doesn't have to throw flowers, and aren't toddlers flying off the handle cute in weddings? I mean they are kids, people expect them to act like kids. Eleven is better suited for being a seating person or the person who mans the guest book not a flower girl.

    11 is definitely too old to be a flower girl. Even 8 is pushing it.

    It's totally fine to have a ring bearer without a flower girl.

    One idea that's growing in popularity is having your grandmas be the flower girls! They get to go down the aisle ahead of the bride instead of being seated by husbands or other family members. I think doing that is impossibly fun Smiley smile

    I think 11 is fine! (I love the grandma pictures above).

    We didn't have a flower girl - only a ring bearer. It was all good.

    The ring bearer in my first wedding was 5 years old... My nephew. He is 32 years old now and is going to hold FHs ring for me. My dog is supposed to be the flower girl but I think she will just be there for a few pics then will go home.

    Remember....This is your wedding. You can do whatever you want to do and your not obligated to explain yourself to anyone. There is not a age requirement for a flower girl nor are you obligated to have one. At the end of the day you should do what you want to do and not what people think you should do.!! Best of luck!
