Florist wants to use professional photos for advertisements??

Jordan, on October 15, 2019 at 4:53 PM Posted in Married Life 0 29

Hey Everyone!! I have been happily married for about 2.5 weeks and today I received a call from the florist who worked my wedding asking if I can allow the photographer to release photos of my bouquet and centerpieces to them to use for advertising purposes. Has anyone had experience with this? I'm kind of wondering what's in it for me, considering my florist and photographer with both very expensive and idk how I feel about them profiting off of my wedding photos.

It really depends on who "owns" the photos. Likely, you have access to them all, but you do not own them, your photographer does. If that's the case, then you really don't have any say because you would have had to sign a contract with the photographer to that effect.

I would take that as a huge compliment and love to have my wedding featured! Maybe the florist would give you a deal on another event? Or even a special anniversary bouquet next year? It can’t hurt to ask, but I do think it’s an honor to have someone essentially say that your wedding is an example of perfection. Be proud of that and put your gorgeous pics out there!

Good point. Definitely depends on your contract with your photographer. We went with ours partially because we would own the photos.

As long as my photographer gave her approval, I would be flattered if any of my vendors wanted to use our photos for their advertisement. “What’s in it for me,” wouldn’t even cross my mind.

I would review your contract or talk to your photographer. There’s a stipulation in my contract that if this scenario happened, she would release the requested images with her watermark on them to the vendor. That way the photographer can get credit for their work.

My venue posts pictures of our wedding quite a bit. So did our hair and makeup artist and our rental company uses them as the main category photos on their website. I was flattered that they used our weddings as an example to post!

I would be flattered if any of my vendors wanted to use my wedding to advertise their services. It just shows that you have good taste in my opinion. Smiley smile

Most contracts say that you don’t own the rights to the photos anyway and they can do with them what they want. I’m actually surprised she asked you but that was nice. I would take that as a huge compliment that they want to use them in their advertising.

It seems pretty normal. I shared pictures with our DJ, officiant, videographer, hair & makeup artist, and florist for them to use on their websites without them even asking.

I think the photographer owns them but they are asking me to sign off on the release before they will give them to the florist.

The florist asked because the photographer said that they need my permission.

It’s very normal. When I was a wedding planner, I would ask photographers for photos all the time. The only mistake is that your florist came to you when she should just go directly to the photographer. Also it’s not as though someone’s “profiting“ off of it. I’m sure that you looked at plenty of photos of someone else’s flowers and centerpieces prior to making your decision to hire them (actually, brides look at professional photos of all of their vendors prior to hiring them. Where do you think most of them got their photos?) If vendors didn’t show professional photos, and only something taken on an iPhone, I’m sure it would make you feel differently about hiring that florist (or any vendor).

It’s networking and it happens in the wedding industry all the time… Vendors request photos of their work from photographers (whether it’s a makeup artist, hairstylist, rental company, wedding planner, musician playing, catering, etc). The vendor just gives photo credit to the photographer when posting those photos. It’s only to showcase THAT vendors work via professional photos.

The florist DID contact the photographer and the photographer told her that I need to give permission.

Interesting.... That’s different! Was a wedding planner for 10 years and they never requested the couples’ permission. But since they did… You can just decline.

Say no! You paid them both for their services. This was part of my big WW to-do last week re: my Wedding pics being tagged and showing up on the venue’s FB page.

Since I paid for the use of their venue, I did NOT feel that I should provide free advertising for them.

They can create the same arrangements and either take or pay for professional photos.

Do NOT let them make money off of your hard-earned money that you spent for your event.

At least they were instructed to ask instead of just being allowed to use them.

I'd be stoked and flattered if I was asked. Well, everyone is different

Personally I think the florist ought to be arranging for her own photography of her work.
