Florida Outdoor Wedding - Jan 9?

Jessica, on March 3, 2015 at 8:36 AM Posted in Planning 0 13

Hi ladies (and gents?),

To give you some background: I'm a vegan yoga instructor who's into essential oils and meditating and mala beads. I want an outdoor wedding in the woods surrounded by nature and chirping birds and woodland animals....bombarded with the insane beauty of nature. (Am I painting you the right picture here?) Okay, I'm obsessed with January 9th, 2016 because it's the first New Moon of the New Year. The new moon is said to symbolize new beginnings, a clean slate, a fresh start. It's perfect! At least in my little world! Some concerns that have been brought up: too cold, perhaps rain, people needing to travel back to Florida after already having been here for the holidays in December, people spending money on us right after the holidays. Our main concern is the weather. We're both Florida natives but somehow there's still confusion over how beautiful January weather is. Help ladies! (and gents!)

Jessica

Okay what part of Florida? You probably are good on rain, but cold, no. January can freeze your nuts off. I had an outdoor wedding in November in Central Florida, and it ended up being 40 degrees with 30 mph straight line winds. Do what you want, but be prepared it may be cold.

Where in Florida are you thinking of? January can definitely be cold in Florida. I live in the tampa area and I remember it getting as low as 37 in January this year.

Like others have said, it all depends on the area of FL. There's a HUGE difference between the Keys and Tallahassee, so it all depends on your location. And people are right about it being hard right after the holidays. It isn't impossible, but also not the best idea.

I am in S. Fl too and having my wedding in March though. I feel like Jan is just not enough time to recoup after the holidays for everyone. Also if you have people coming from different state where it gets snow (like me) they can have chances of getting snowed in. All my family and friends are flying from up north and if I would have done my date in Jan or even Feb, they have huge chances of getting snowed in and get stuck and that's extra money for them for flights plus wedding expenses.

Haha thanks for your help errbody! The wedding's in South Florida, Palm Beach County. I enjoy human interaction over line graphs of weather trends Smiley smile Thanks Marina, you definitely offered some insight I hadn't thought of.

    Hi Jessica,

Unfortunately, in (South) Florida, it doesn't matter the month, we will always be susceptible to rain. I was married on Dania Beach in November, in 2013. While the chances of rain were very little to none leading up to the day, we had two hours of torrential rain and gusts of wind before and during the ceremony. LOL!

Now, half of our guests were from either Boston or Toronto, so they had to deal with travel expenses and such. We got married right before Thanksgiving, so I'm not sure if it makes a difference whether the wedding is before or after the holidays during winter season, but most of our guests made it to the wedding. The ones that didn't were the ones that wouldn't have been able to afford it, regardless of the season.

Here on the Suncoast (south of Tampa, north of Naples), January is usually dry and the avg. daily high is 72. But, it can get quite chilly (by Fla. standards) at night. We don't usually get a freeze, but it can get down in the 40s.

I have lived in FL for 28 years. Ft Lauderdale for 20, Central FL for the past 8. Any month can rain, but I think you're safe in early January. SO far in 2015, we had a LATE winter, so it wasn't freezing cold around Jan. 9, but every year is different. I think if the date is really, really important to you then you are definitely safer than say, in the summer.

I picked March hoping for beautiful weather and I'm still holding out for that! Even though it's been raining off and on. It's just a part of living in fl

I should add that it was pretty darn cold in November last year, warmed up for December, and got very cold again in February. So it's just very hard to tell. But early January rain is *kind of* rare.
