Florida Keys or Miami Honeymoon

KTizzle, on August 20, 2014 at 4:15 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 10

FH and I are considering U.S. honeymoons, as they're likely to be cheaper (or are they?) - factoring in we don't have passports yet, so that would add to the cost.

Anyone have any suggestions for a honeymoon in the southern ocean-side area of FL? (Keys and/or Miami, definitely nothing gulfside) We plan to meet with a AAA travel agent soon, but I wanted to see if any of you ladies have any input!

- Dates would be May 18 OR June 21 (small/intimate ceremony in May followed by casual BBQ celebration in June)

- Budgeting about $2,000 to $3,000 for everything (air, lodging, food, activities, you name it)

- Avoiding anything where we need to clean up after ourselves, so we won't be renting a condo/house/etc.

Does that all sound realistic? I guess we'll find out soon. Thanks in advance for any input!

Honestly you would spend the same going to an all-inclusive somewhere out of the country, when you factor in activities, food and travel. The resort we stayed at had really wonderful rooms for 7 days beginning at $2400/per couple. And that was one of the pricier resorts. You can find them much cheaper to account for airfare. A honeymoon travel agent is the best person to guide you through something like this.

Also, getting a passport is easy (unless you are my husband who is adopted).

I 100% vote for Key West over Miami. Key West has a more laid back, tropical vacation feel. To me, Miami feels like a big dirty city (sorry Miamians!) that is very muggy and hot. I did not love Miami when I went...but I adored Key West. If you go to Key West, stay close to Duval St (but not ON Duval) and you will have a blast. There is so much to do and see!

In terms of your bullet points:

-This sounds like a perfect time to go. We went in late May/early June this year and the weather was perfect every day.

    -Budget sounds good. Will work.

-Plenty of hotels and B&Bs on Key West. Just off Duval is your best bet. We stayed at the Blue Marlin Inn (good location, good prices) and liked it a lot. Use TripAdvisor to research hotels and things to do.

I second Key West!!! Its my favorite city! You can save some $$$ by flying into Fort Myers ($500 or so vs $900 directly into Key West) and then take the Key West Express (its a 3.5 hour ferry ride that takes you to Key West with a full service bar and some, awful, food), we left at 8am or so and were there by noon.

The only problem I could forsee with that is your budget...lodging, especially hotels, are VERY EXPENSIVE in Key West and you could easily spend $1000 on a hotel for a long weekend. I would highly recommend looking into air BnB or vrbo.com for something just off Duval Street as the pricing will be significantly less than a full service hotel.

Thank you ladies for the input! I'm not concerned about the process of getting a passport - just trying to keep our costs lower. I am checking a lot out on TripAdvisor for all of the FL Keys. It's a bit overwhelming!

To keep costs lower is another reason why I would reccommend a private rental. You guys can keep beverages and food there, keeping down the cost of eating all your meals out. While I've only stayed in a hotel in Key West, my mom and stepdad rented a small one bedroom condo 1 block off Duval Street 2 years ago at the same time for a week and got it for around $750 and it was cute with a private patio, kitchenette, ect

I totally agree with SunshineJenn about travelling for the same price, out of the country.

However, if you're set on doing Florida, for the love of God, PLEASE do the Keys, because Miami is congested, overpriced, and land of the superficial. Miami is no longer a vacation spot, it's all built up in big business. The Keys are still structured around relaxation and real vacationing.

I don't know what everyone else' experiences are, but my family does not travel to Florida any later than May. It gets HOT in the summer and can start as early as June. Though, it's definitely cooler when you by the ocean because the breeze you get. So, you're probably fine, but I just want to chime in. And I agree, the Keys are beautiful.
