Flight Issues

Roxana, on July 1, 2019 at 4:56 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 19

Need some serious help figuring out what to do about our honeymoon flights.

So, we booked the perfect flight with Delta through Expedia for an awesome price. Unfortunately, our flight times were changed around 3 times and eventually outright cancelled. They re-booked us free of charge (as they should) and all was good until I received another email last week stating that our flight has been cancelled again Smiley sad

Our options for re-booking are extremely limited as we are leaving the venue to go directly to the airport (which is about an hour drive). As of right now, the only flight option they have for me lands at our destination around 10:30 P.M. which is way later than I'd like. I really don't want to spend my wedding night on a 3 hour layover in Atlanta when I really should be relaxing in Florida.

My question is, what should we do?

A. Cancel with Delta and try to find flights elsewhere (I've yet to see a much better time option elsewhere and the cost will likely be higher)

B. Don't book anything and wait to see if something better comes up in the next few weeks

C. Book this awful flight and hope that they let us switch flights free of cost if something better comes up (seriously doubt they'd do this for me based on how awful my experience has been so far).

Please help. Is this a common issue with all airlines and how often do airlines create new flights? I've flown my whole life (with and without Expedia) and have never experienced schedule changes/ cancellations like this before.... I'm feeling really demotivated right now Smiley sad

I've never heard of this many flight changes/cancellations. Have you been able to talk to someone from Delta on the phone?

I called Delta this past weekend. The lady said she felt really bad and that they could refund me (expedia has also offered this). I ended up telling her I'd call back because I was unsure of what our next move would be.

I prefer to fly with American Airlines. I book directly through the AA website. Check there are see if they have a flight that works for you. I would want to cancel with Delta and get a refund.

It sounds like you should get refunded and book with another airline. I've honestly had bad experiences with Delta, Frontier, and United. We only fly Southwest now.

I just did a Google Flights search and I literally cannot find a single flight in the D.C. Metro area that will cooperate with our times... Smiley sad

That's kind of why I'm wondering how often new flights are added.

Personally, I would raise a stink with Delta explaining your situation and how unacceptable the cancellations are. You booked your flight in advance and because they cancelled not once but twice on you that you will be spending part of your honeymoon on a layover. Request that they provide you with travel vouchers for future flights. You should be getting more out of this. I would hate to be on a layover but it’s not the end of the world. If you can get free flight tickets to use for another day then I would do it.

Do you think that Delta would give me the honeymoon flights for free? I could get a refund from Expedia after the fact.

Can you get a hotel room that night and fly out early the next morning? That could potentially give you more options and would be a more fun wedding night than sitting in an airport!

Did you try all 3 airports? BWI too? When we lived in Bethesda, we would always fly out of BWI because Reagan and Dulles were way more expensive and had fewer flights.

I'm pretty sure I checked bwi but can look again.
However, that's a 2 hour drive from the venue Smiley sad

Yuck. That's not ideal either. Hopefully more flights will open up soon!

Definitely speak to Delta first to see if there's anything else they can do for you. If not honestly I would look elsewhere. I don't know how much you paid for your tickets and what your budget is but FH and I booked our flights with United at a great price and have had a great experience so far!

I wonder if they'll do something if you make a complaint on their social media page? I've heard stories of companies dragging their feet on issues until the customer makes it public, but I wonder how well that works.

Good luck with this! I know how frustrating it can be. If you're switching airlines, I would try to stick with Southwest or American if you can. I book travel for people at work all of the time, and whenever there have been issues or changes, they have always been the easiest to work with.

    Thank you for the suggestions!

Will definitely keep Southwest and American in mind if we decide to outright cancel.

When in October? AA has a direct flight on Sunday's DCA-VPS in the morning.
