First time dress shopping

mtall912, on August 10, 2017 at 6:32 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

Do you guys have any suggestions for me before I go dress shopping for the first time? Like what to wear under, or anything like that? I know the styles I think I would like but is it a good idea to try a bunch of different styles?

Definitely a good idea to be open and try different styles. Sometimes what you like the best may be the unexpected.

You should wear nude underwear, I wore the nude seamless kind, and a nude bra, which the dress shop I was at told me to take my bra off anyway while trying on the dresses. You can try different styles of dresses, you might fall in love with something you didn't think you would like. Good luck Smiley smile

@HappilyEverEdge, thanks so much, I definitely will wear some nude underwear I was worried about lines and such making the dresses look odd so seamless is perfect! Thanks

Be open minded and wear nude undies! They gave me a corset/bra to wear but my black underwear showed through like every dress, so don't do that!

@FutureMrsE, and black is likely what I would have worn with out even thinking haha. Thank you! How many people did you bring? I chose to just bring my bridal party since my mom is drama. I will bring her separate once I get down to a couple choices.

Wear nude undergarments maybe strapless bra

I went to davids bridal and they gave me a bustier to use while trying on dresses. Call the shop you are going to and ask their advice on what u should wear.

    1. Know your budget

    2. Be open minded to trying on different types of dresses

    3. Wear a strapless bra

    4. Wear nude undies

    5. Remember that the bridal consultant will be with you in the room so no holey undies. ;-)

    6. Have fun! It is a wonderful experience.

Nude underwear with no lace. I wore pale pink underwear that had lace on them and the dresses that had bra straps in them already the clips were getting caught on the lace. The one time the consultant had to put her hand down the dress to help get it undone.

Dont forget to have fun! And don't be afraid to say exactly what you think of the dresses. Point out features you love and features you don't love. The consultant has your back and should bring you dresses you'll look best in, which may mean you need to be open to styles you originally don't like. Just give it a shot, you'll be surprised! Also, David's Bridal pulls from your favorites list, but I don't know about other shops. Make a dedicated album on your phone of favorite dress styles and let the consultant reference from that for a good start. I went to DB and a dress I originally added to my favorites (wanted to reference it for a corset back, love those) was pulled first and I loved it!! I didn't think I'd like it (again, it was meant to be a reference to liking just one part of it), but I ended up buying it

@rz_tobe, thank you so much yes I have so much time so I want it to be fun but productive! I have made some favorites in the Davids bridal page and I have things saved, thanks! I wasn't sure if they just wanted to pull what they thought would look best or cared what you liked from pictures

Make sure you eat something before hand and have some water on hand. Trying on dresses is hot and hard work surprisingly! The store I bought my dress from was quite comfortable temperature wise but once you put on and take off so many layers on so many times it starts to heat up! I didn't even think of this and I was starving and thirsty by the end of my appointment.

Probably not as big an issue at David's but check sample sizes so you know what to expect going in. Also remember sizes are crazy so ignore the number and concentrate on how it fits and makes you feel.

I also second the water - it gets crazy hot.

I ended up with exactly the style of dress I thought I would, but I still went into the appointments with an open mind. I wore nude seamless underwear and a strapless bra, and the consultant at one shop put me in a corset for a dress that had a corset back. I also wore a pretty full face of makeup - it helped me to feel better in everything and see the full picture.

@caitlin - great advice on water I wouldn't have thought about that either and passing out from trying on wedding dresses would not be fun!

@cd- I'm usually not one to care about sizes but I just lost weight so I pay more attention to it now so I will remember to try and ignore, your right the fit and how it makes me feel are much more important

@futureHennigan- that's a good idea with the makup, day to day I wear very little so that will help bring the look to life like it will be on my wedding day!
