First time dress looking

Nikki, on November 30, 2019 at 11:41 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5
Hi! So my mom and I are planning on going to David's Bridal in a few weeks to start looking at dresses. I know what I don't want, I have no clue what I do want. For the first time even looking/trying on dresses, what should I expect? I've read about bringing undergarments with me, but I'm not even close to knowing what I would need, seeing as I don't know what style I'll be wearing. I'd appreciate any tips and tricks you could offer!

Go in with an open mind and try on every style possible. Even those you think you don’t want. It’s amazing how different dresses can look depending on the body type. If spanx typically make you feel more comfortable in tight fitting clothes, bring them. If you have a strapless bra, bring it. Neither of those things are really a necessity, although I would wear light colored underwear that you’re comfortable with a stranger seeing you in.

I agree with Caytlyn. Also, most important do not wear make up lol. The dress I tried on had a lipstick mark. When I went to DB for my dress they did provide a boustier because I tried on strapless and spaghetti strap. Definitely be open to different styles and listen to the advice of the consultant. On their website create a free account and start looking at the different dress styles. You can favorite the ones you like best and then your consultant can pull those for you to try on. You might love the dress you least expected which is common. Look up other styles on pinterest too just to see what you like and do not like....for example you may not like ballgown so that can rule that out and think of what is best for your body type. Good luck and post pics. Smiley smile

If you dont have undergarments to bring they have bustiers you can use. They also allowed me to wear one of their heels just to envision the dress with the right shoes.
    Enjoy your dress shopping.

I wouldn't worry about undergarments too much! The DB I went to took my measurements and gave me a bustier and slip at the beginning of my appointment.

When you're trying on dresses, remember to keep an open mind and try whatever the consultant brings you. Never let anyone pressure you into buying a dress you don't love 100%. It's completely fine to sleep on it before making your final decision. Have fun!

I actually tried on every dress (over 40 of them) with just a thong on. In doing so, I didn’t have to worry about any straps/bra lines/etc. getting in the way of the silhouette/neckline/back detailing of the dresses. You could do pasties if you’re not comfortable being almost nude with the stylist, but they see mostly naked women every day, so it’s not a big deal to them. As PP stated, try on one of every kind of silhouette to see what you like the most. Once you’ve narrowed that down, then you can get into the details. If you like it on the hanger, try it; it called to you for a reason. Don’t worry if you don’t find “the one” on the first day; like I said, it took about 7 appointments or so and many many gowns to figure out the one I wanted. Also, if you don’t get emotional over the dress, that doesn’t mean it isn’t the one. It’s actually more common to not cry than it is to cry (though media wants to tell us otherwise).
