First Dress Fitting - Should I bother trying to lose weight?

Alison, on September 23, 2014 at 10:42 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

Hi ladies,

So I went for my first fitting yesterday. My dress doesn't do up Smiley sad It's maybe like a 1/2" too small right at the top part of the zipper. It is possible, however, to take the side seams out to make it fit. So that's some good news.

Now that I'm 9 weeks away from the wedding, my trainer at the gym wants to put me on the crazy routine and I want to put myself on a healthier eating plan. So what happens if I lose 5-10 pounds in the next two months and then my dress is too big again because I altered it to be bigger. Do I just get it altered now and then just not loose any weight? Are there any brides out there that put their dress on the day of the wedding and it was too big? What did you do? I'm really not sure what to do here. Any advice would be appreciated!

(Sorry I didn't take any photos this time!)

I am planning on a fitting one week before my wedding for that reason. I have already lost 13lbs in 2 1/2 months and im still going

When I had my first fitting my seamstress told me to maintain the weight I was at...do not lose weight, do not gain weight. The reason being is, my seamstress was tailoring to fit my body how it was. If she took it out a little... then a month later I lost weight, she'd have to take back in what she took out and I'd be double paying and she would be doing twice the work. Does that make sense? I wouldn't risk losing/gaining weight and having my seamstress bust her ass closer to my wedding trying to get the dress to fit my changing body. Stay how you are now, so the dress can be tailored to you. Still work out and eat healthy, but make sure you are not losing more than 5 pounds.

1 fitting a week before your wedding is not even close to enough time to alter a dress to ones body. It takes a while (if you want it done right). Factor in time needed for your dress to be pressed along with your veil. The last fitting a week before the wedding should be your final fitting, and that day you should take your dress home.

@Macksgirl - When was your first fitting? Maybe I can hold off a few weeks before taking it in. Did you stress about making sure you didn't gain/lose anything? I kinda wanted to put a corset in, but I was quoted almost double of what it would take to just let out the seams.

Ordered my dress in early January of this year. It didn't come in until 1 month and a week before the wedding and it was soooo stressful! I had a lot that needed to be done to my dress (bustle, take it out at the hips, take it in at the chest, hemmed, fixed so it wasn't gathering under my chest...etc) My seamstress had to bust her ass to get the dress done in time.... and we had a little over a week to spare until the wedding once my dress was complete. But after alterations were done I still had to get my dress/veil steamed so there were no wrinkles.

It sounds like you have a good amount of things that need to be done to your dress. I would get it done as soon as possible. You really do not want to be stressing like I was. I didn't stress about gaining/losing weight because I was in my dress so much a month before the wedding because of all my fittings, so I knew it would fit me because it was being altered to my body. Don't get my wrong, stick to your diet and eat healthy, you will be okay Smiley smile

Since you are a month out, I would personally not risk losing any weight. As Macksgirl said, you would potentially be paying for double work to be done. You also never know where you will lose the weight from, so that could mean part of the dress may have to be reconstructed. (My MOH had to have the front part of her dress reconstructed due to losing the weight in her chest, and that was EXPENSIVE as hell).

Also please keep in mind how stressful the month before your wedding will be. It will be just one less thing you have to worry about if you maintain the same weight.

I'm sure you look beautiful in your dress already anyway!

My seamstress says the earliest she normally takes wedding dress alterations is 3wks before. You can fluctuate too much before that time period and most alterations only take a week. I had to do a bit earlier due to being out of state but did the final fitting last week.

My wedding is on halloween, so not the off, but I went through this twice. thought I was so on the ball since I'm making my own dress, and fittings wouldn't be a problem. I'm still not sure how it happened, but I managed to loose a mess of back fat. knew I was looking a bit of weight and toning up, but it's like it all came from my back!

I recut the dress and it was fine. put the dress away, then about a month later I put in on and my groom laughed when he saw it. I'd lost a bunch in the shoulders and the bodice looked terrible. strapps falling off of me.

so about a week ago, the decision was official. my vintage gown has been closeted and I'm making a whole new one. new look and everything. the old style was designed for someone chunkier, doesn't look right now.

I know my sewing skills and there's time. I'm not worried, but I understand what you are going through! I bow to all the brides that have had to deal with the fitting situations when it was in someone else's hands!

to answer your question, I would speak with the fitter and ask her suggestion. this isn't just a 'I'll loose weight' situation. it's a formal program with a trainer, so a drop in size could happen if you stick with it. I'd get their advice!

but, another thing to consider is that if you are training, you may actually get bigger in places if you gain muscle. I ended up with a very tight prom dress (it fit, but I was irritated about it) because against my objections they insisted on altering it 6 weeks ahead. they knew I was a weight lifter and sure enough I got bigger in the rib cage. the salons answer to it? you should have known to not lift those weights since you had a dress of a certain size.

so I was just supposed to stop my training for a dress? wow.

sorry about my ramble, the dress thing has me a bit nervous. back to the sewing table!

NO! I had this exact same thing happen. My dress has always been snug but I didn't realize that it was pulling at the zipper in the back. I tried to just lose a little bit of weight and I did but I lost it all in my butt and boobs. Turns out it was my actual rib cage that is just a hair too wide. With three weeks out I had to have the top 3" taken out a 1/2". Just do it now and save yourself the stress and maintain your weight/size.

Bottom line, never try to change yourself to fit into a dress have the dress made to fit you. It will fit and feel so much better.

4 weeks before my wedding i had to take in about 2 inches. I am now 4 days from the wedding and 4-6 pounds less than on the day I last tried on my dress. the stress in the last week along with having the best motivation ever to not eat those extra sweets, etc, has caused me to drop a lot of weight and I'm guessing this is pretty common. if i were you i would definitely not take it out, but get serious about hitting your goal weight. I didn't really start to lose until 4 months out and i've lost 15 pounds in that time. my dress will most likely be a little big on my wedding but I I've always thought I'd rather have it big than small, or feeling bigger than I would like

Thanks everyone. I'm going to see if I can push out my appointment a few weeks. That will still give the seamstress 4 weeks to get the alterations done. Maybe I can loose enough to fit back into the dress. And if I don't loose enough then it can be taken in then. (This is all of course is the seamstress agrees to my plan lol)

It's hard to figure it all out. you don't really know what size you are going to be until right before the wedding. hope it goes well!

With 4 weeks to go my dress didn't zip the last inch. I lost 5 pounds and went back yesterday with 2 weeks to go. It zipped perfectly. I can't gain any weight but I am still able to lose a few pounds without hesitation. If it's only a half inch, I think you should be able to lose the weight.
