First dress fitting - invite someone, or go alone?

lilam18, on January 27, 2018 at 11:50 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17
Hi friends! I am taking my dress to a seamstress for the first time in the next few weeks. I was planning to just go by myself, but just started wondering- would it be helpful to have a second opinion at the appointment? What did you do?

Thanks!

I think it helps to have someone with you because they can see the overall fit versus you just looking in a mirror at one angle. I think I would've been more stressed if someone else wasn't there (aside from the seamstress) because it's sometimes hard to see what's going on with the dress when you're wearing it.

A second opinion can certainly help, but that person should have at least a passing knowledge of sewing/how items should fit.

I just went for my first fitting yesterday! My mom came with me because she got a fitting to her dress too. It was honestly pretty anticlimactic and was much quicker than I thought it would be. She put a couple of pins in the straps, decided on the hem, we talked about cups, and that was it. But my dress was pretty close to fitting as is. It may be helpful to have someone with you for a second opinion, especially if more extensive work is needed.

I think it is definitely helpful for a second opinion but when it comes down to it if you have no one that would give you honest but helpful opinions then you should just go by yourself! One of my bridesmaids is way too opinionated and she will not be going with me to dress shop lol

I would take some as they will be able to see the things that you may not.

I needed someone to help me get into my dress so I brought one of my bridesmaids with me. I feel much more comfortable with them helping!

My first fitting is in a couple weeks and one of my bridesmaids asked if she could come so I was thrilled I didn't have to ask anyone to come with me. To me, it's much less stressful with a friendly face next to me. I'm just getting a hem and a bustle put in so, not really a second opinion kind of thing but I'm so glad I'm not going alone.

I went by myself and I was glad of it. I wanted to see it for myself and not through someone else’s eyes. I know that I got the dress because I love it now and not because someone else liked it.

I'm going in a month and only my mom is coming with me. She was with me when I said yes to my dress. So its fitting to have her with me again.

Thanks everyone! I think that I only need a bustle and a hem, but sounds like most people found a second opinion helpful. I think I’ll see if my FMIL would like to come with me, since she helped me pick out the dress!

I just had my first fitting and I brought someone with me just in case. During that first appointment I got into the dress and we only talked about altering the hem. She took measurements and I was outta there. I kinda felt bad for making her come. Buuuut at the next appointment we are going to talk about my bustle. I will definitely bring her for that. On the third fitting when we learn how to pin the dresss up with the bustle, I’d definitely love to have my friend there with me for that too. So in essence, maybe ask the seamstress what she plans on doing at each fitting and decide if you need someone there or not :-)

Great point, I didn’t think of that! I’ll email her and ask.

I did all of them by myself and I was really happy with the process. I’d just send pics to my mom and sister after each fitting to show them progress and let them feel involved

Take someone for a second opinion. You want to make sure that you don’t get steamrolled by the seamstress if your vision does not match her opinion. It’s easy to feel like they know what they are doing and go along with something you're unsure about

If you're going to take someone with you, take someone who's opinion you trust unconditionally. I took my mother and BP with me and am so glad I did. They noticed things that I didn't (my hem line was not even) and I am truly grateful for that.
