First Dress Fitting Anxiety - Help! UPDATED with Pics

Cavan, on October 20, 2011 at 2:09 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

My dress came in last week and today I had my first fitting. Would you believe that they ordered it 2 sizes too small? It happened.

Needless to say, I'm freaking out. They said they can take it out 6 inches but it's a satin gown and I'm worried that the previous seams will be obvious. They were not worried or stressed at all but I am so nervous about what it is going to look like. It's a corsetted dress but even tied up to high heaven it was still gaping and you could see my skin. I have three months before my wedding so I will be going on a very strict diet and will see what happens.

Someone please give me reassurance that everything will be fine.

Did you ok the initial order for it to be 2 sizes too small? If not, they should offer to re-order the dress in the right size and rush it if it is their mistake.

They measured me and I'm assuming they did it incorrectly.. I had nothing to do with the sizes and had no idea on how the sizing even works. They seem to think they could let it out enough for it to fit me properly. My next fitting is the first week of December so I'm counting on them to do it right.

I agree with Agata... if it was their mistake I would have them reorder the dress in the right size at their cost. No reason for you to suffer because of their mistake.

@Cavan if I were you I would demand that they reorder your dress. I know that dresses can take a long time to come in if custom ordered, but the designer should be able to find what salon has purchased that style from their inventory (is all else fails).

If they are like the salons that I worked for & ultimately purchased my gown from, they took your measurements before ordering. At the least they would have placed you in that designer's gowns to size you. If it was their mistake, they should fix it. Did you sign a contract or anything stating what you ordered, size, style, etc? If they did then they should be responsible for fixing it. If they cannot replace it they should definitely pay for the alterations.

*Here's my reassurance for you: most formal wear has wide seam allowances on purpose. However, they are also their for the structural integrity and support of the gown. If they say they can fix it (and they are unable to order you a new one in time) I would let them

When you ordered you gown they should have had you initial by the size they were ordering if you did not then I would see if they could reorder it.

(cont'd) assuming all other options are exhausted. They have inconveniened you and now you will be stressing until it's fixed. Getting your dress is supposed to be exciting, not like this. I would make sure they make this whole situation right.

This isn't reassuring at all! Smiley smile

I do have a receipt that I signed saying that "garments are ordered in the size closest to your measurements on the manufacturer's sizing chart". But I've never seen the sizing chart so I have no idea what size I would be. I do know that when they measured my waist I did remark, "wow, I didn't realize my waist was that small". I'm pretty sure I was measured incorrectly.

I don't know what to do now. I have already paid for alterations ($260 worth). I do want to trust them that they will have it sized right for me by my next fitting. Maybe I should bump it up and go before December so that I'm not freaking out until then.

I agree with mekmek. My salon measured me and went over the different options because I was in between sizes. When we decided they wrote it out on a contact and I initialed the size being ordered

Cavan I'm sorry I know our comments are hard to take. If your nerves will allow it I'd wait a day or two and then go back to the salon. Ask to speak to the manger, express your concerns and see what can be done. If they attempt to assure you that the 6" will make everything "perfect" ask if you can view the gown after one side has been completed to assure yourself that the current seam is not visible.

That's a great idea MekMek. If the one side is not right then I'll ask them to order me a new one.

    Thanks!

So, I found out the problem I have. After researching all night and this morning I have found out why my dress is too small. I am a plus-size bride and tried on dresses in the plus-size section, found the dress I love even though it was too small on me. They ordered it after measuring me. Remember, I did not at any time see a size chart.

Now, I've come to find it is NOT a plus-size dress and they just ordered the largest dress they could. What!!! So even if I wanted it in a larger size it doesn't come in it. How could they let me order the dress if it does not come in my size?

Anyway, I have no idea what i can do at this point. I will wait and see if they can work magic on my dress and fix it. I've included some photos on me in the dress. Clearly it is too small!

That's a beautiful dress! Just remember you are dealing with professionals, and if they say they can do it without seeing the old seems, they can do it. They do this for a living, hopefully you have a good bridal shop/seamstress and they will take care of it.

They should have advised you that they were ordering it in the largest size it comes in. Every designer has a size chart. The million bridesmaid dresses I have worn, they have measured me and then matched my measurements to the size chart. Did they write your measurements on the order form or reciept? I would dispute the alterations charge or ask for a discount because they didn't disclose to you that the dress wouldn't fit or wasn't ordered to your measurements.
