First dance song opinions

pinguino, on June 8, 2015 at 1:30 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

So FH gave a suggestion for our first dance song, Red Hot Chili Pepper's "Hard to Concentrate"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jnRcM8Qf1A

I like the song a lot, but it seems a bit fast for a first dance. He suggested taking dance lessons to choreograph it. I would love to do this, and was shocked that he suggested it, but I don't think we will have the time or money to do this. Neither of us are dancers, I just assumed our first dance would resemble an 8th grade my hands on his shoulders and his on my hips awkward swaying to a slower song like Ray LaMontagne's "You Are the Best Thing"

Red Hot Chili Peppers is more reflective of our style of music we like, but we are also set to have a waterfall of fireworks go off near the end of our dance. Opinions? Advice/suggestions? Has anyone else choreographed their first dance? Was it difficult if you had little to no dance skills?

I really like this song! We are dancing to a Lynyrd Skynyrd song for our first dance and we've been taking dance lessons. The dance teacher hasn't choreographed the dance but she's taught us steps all based off the Viennese Waltz. FH has taken classes before, but not me, and no one has ever called me graceful. By our wedding day, we will have taken 7 classes, but we practice at home also. I think it's a good idea! Best of luck!

I think I will at least look into lessons. If it won't break the bank I would be up for it, I think it is a somewhat more unique song and is a better fit for us anyway. I think 7 classes would be sufficient. Have you taken group or individual lessons?

I don't have any choreography suggestions, but we were going to dance to Foo Fighter's Everlong and found an acoustic version of it. Maybe there's an acoustic version of the song so you can actually dance slow?

We have a few in mind but our favorites are Jason Evigan - Cinema and Grateful Dead - Built to Last

You could look on groupon or living social for dance lessons. It should make it cheaper

You could do a salsa dance to that song. It's pretty easy to salsa and would look cute. Great wedding song.

There are a lot of Latin dances that would work for this. I feel like it'd be a great Argentine tango, or you could do a slightly quick rumba or slow cha-cha. IDK about salsa, though, I've never done it.

I'd opt for group dance lessons over privates -- they're a lot cheaper and I find I learn more quickly in groups than in privates, because rotating partners and not having the instructor's attention on you constantly helps to minimize frustration and keep the pressure off you. Check LivingSocial and Groupon for deals on classes, too, and be sure to comparison shop between studios.

I am not familiar with dance names/styles, but I figured something more Latin like would fit the bill for this song better than regular slow dancing. I did find a pretty good deal on Groupon for a studio not too far away from us, 4 private lessons and 2 group lessons for $130. Many of the places I have called won't give you prices, they want you to come in for a $25 consultations first, blah blah blah. To me, if you won't tell me what it costs until you can try to talk me into it in person, means its expensive. So I think $130 is a good deal, though I don't have much comparison to go on.
