First Dance Song - How long is too long?

JENNIFER, on September 29, 2018 at 8:09 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 14

I am piecing together a few of our favorite songs for our first dance, but I'm worried right now that it's too long. It's right at 6 minutes.. I'm trying to incorporate what he wants and what I want into one..

6 minutes is long, in my opinion. That’ll feel like an eternity while you’re out they’re dancing! FH and I are having the DJ fade out song out at about 2 minutes. It’s a good, natural sounding place to fade it out and 2 minutes is more than enough center of attention dancing time for me.

6 minutes does seem like a long time. If you can I would try to cut it down a bit.

My mindset is that dances on Dancing with the Stars are 90 seconds or less. They are pros who REALLY know what they are doing and 90 seconds is plenty. Watching "regular people" dance for any long than that is just plain boring and/or painful. Your DJ can help you splice together 30-45 seconds of a couple of songs and you'll be good to go!

Thanks, I think I'll make a couple cuts. There are a couple that I wasn't sure about.

    Current list is :

    Dance with me - Orleans

At Last - Etta James (I'd cut this one too but I think he wants it)

    Song # 3 - Stone Sour

In Case you didn't know - Chris Young (probable cut)

    Infared - Three Days Grace

Your Arms Feel Like Home - 3 Doors Down (probable cut)

Your The Inspiration - Chicago (our song)

When I'm With you - Johnny Mathis

Now & Forever - Jack & Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas

Maybe a little too long, unless after the 2 minute mark the DJ asks everyone to join in, or y’all could break off from each other and go pick someone else to dance with, etc..

No DJ, we are just doing a playlist. I cut a few and it's less than 5 now. I'll check with him on a few others. Most are just the chorus or the intro of the songs.

No more than 2 minutes. You have a lot of songs even if you're fading them in and out it will sound disjointed. Having a last dance is popular now so you could also pick 1 or 2 to splice together for your last dance.

6 minutes for a wedding dance is way too long. Your guests will watch for the first 2 minutes and then you will begin to see them start to talk with their table, etc. If the Chicago song is your song, I would choose that one, since it is super special to you, and edit it to about 2 minutes or so. No more than 3. As for the other songs, can you ask your DJ to put them on the MUST PLAY list, so that at some point during the night they will be played? That way you get the special song for the first dance, plus all the other songs too.

6 minutes is too long to make people watch you dance. I'd suggest just choosing one song and keeping it under 3 minutes. To be really honest no one will care as much about what you dance to as you guys will so it won't matter too much to guests if they hear the compilation. I'd pick your favorites and then incorporate the other songs into the reception playlist.

You have such a cute music list! Smiley laugh

I agree, 6 minutes is quite long. People tend to lose interest when a dance/performance is longer than 3 minutes. Maybe take half of one song and fade out to the 2nd song in a cool way. I have seen some couples have their first dance music start out with a slower song and then switch to a more upbeat song with more fun energy to end on a fun note.
