First dance song- do lyrics matter?

Emily, on February 12, 2017 at 1:44 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18

We don't really have "a song", so we just listen out for pretty ones. My question to you ladies... Do you think the words of the song matter as much as the sound?

For example, we think Cherry Wine by Hozier sounds exactly like what we want. The lyrics?... Not so much. No one would probably understand the words at the reception, but if they knew the song or looked it up later, they might have some questions!

We also like "this town", but some of the verses refer to break ups, the rest just sounds like a love song.

What do we think?

Yes and no. People aren't really going to be listening intently for the words, but as long as it's not *so* out there it's probably fine.

For one, there are men on this site as well.

IMO, the lyrics are important. I wouldn't want my first dance with my husband to be a break up song, or something that alluded to it at all. It's not really about what your guests think about it though (they might find it weird too though), it's about how you feel about it.

    ETA: clarity/words

"You guys" is somehow gender neutral, I can try to even the playing field by using " You ladies" and they can assume they're still included!

It's a bummer that the prettiest sounding songs are inspired by heartbreak instead of love! We'll find something that meets both requirements... Eventually...

Maybe! We could look at it!

Because I write the way I talk and I don't edit out colloquialisms. And I didn't think it would draw attention, but the internet IS a strange place.

That's fair. Sorry dudes. I didn't put any thought into writing it either way. I just know I try to stay away from "You guys" because even though that's accepted as including all genders, it really isn't... Anyway, I digress. Sorry board dudes.

We don't really have "a song" either, so we have been searching lately. We love Work Song by Hozier, but it's a little too slow for our tastes. We also love For Eden, but it's in 5/4 which seemed awkward to dance to.

We finally settled on Not With Haste by Mumford & Sons.

The lyrics matter imo. We didn't have a song. FH picked our song out based on that its one of his favorite singers and the lyrics.

I know other people probably won't hear as much of the lyrics as I do, but I'm SO nitpicky when it comes to the lyrics of our first dance song. If it has one line I don't like, it's out.

That said, I do think it matters but probably not as big a deal as I tend to make of it.

Lyrics definitely matter. Some people can be distracted by a lovely melody, but others will definitely notice off or inappropriate lyrics. Isn't it incredible how artists can make heartache sound so beautiful? Nonetheless, there are plenty of other songs that express love. Scroll through the forums for first dance suggestions. It's come up several times.

Our first dance song is James Arthur "Say you won't let go" which is a beautiful romantic song, but the first verse says something like "holding your hair back while you were throwing up" lol

Not the most romantic, but the rest of the song is beautiful... Lol

Breakup lyrics though.. Might be a little too much

They definitely matter to us. I'm sure our guests won't really notice unless the lyrics were something like "don't stop pop that pussy, let me see you doo doo brown," which isn't going to happen. (:

We're having trouble finding a song that is a true love song that we enjoy the music to as well. We keep picking out songs and then realizing the lyrics are sad. It's such a challenge!

Lyrics matter. I think Centerpiece once cited Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' wedding as an example of this. I can't recall what song it was, but when Centerpiece posted the lyrics, it made you scratch your head and wonder why anyone would think that was appropriate for a wedding.

I suggest finding instrumentals for those songs if you have your heart set on them as an alternatively, in addition to a song that's lyrically appropriate.

Listen to 'from the ground up' by Dan&shay. I'm gonna try to convince FH to use it but he hates country so idk...

Yeah, that definitely rules out cherry wine. It's not a breakup song, it's about domestic abuse :/ but it's really pretty, I recommend listening to it!

Lyrics matter. I've been at a wedding where the first dance song is "One" by U2.... awkward!

Lyrics matter. I really love the song Once Upon A December because it's such a beautiful song to waltz to and I got married in December. But it's a song about memory disorders, so we had to veto it as a first dance song.

We got married last month. We had Fleetwood Mac 'The Chain' - a break-up song! A few people thought it was strange, but who cares. We love Fleetwood Mac, love the tune, and the dancefloor was rocking as soon as everyone joined us! The song makes us happy, and we have great memories dancing around our flat to it Smiley smile I don't understand why a first dance song has to be romantic, it's about enjoying dancing with your partner Smiley smile
