First dance - slow or choreographed

Hannah, on July 21, 2017 at 11:02 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 22

Did you just do a regular slow dance (where you just kinda sway back and forth) or did you do a fancier dance with spinning and what not? I don't think we have time to be leaning a choreographed dance but all the songs I like are faster paced (like "can't take my eyes off of you") :,(

We're doing part of a slow song and then a fast song. For slow song, FH wants to do dancing we learned in ballroom dancing class (we took a class back in the winter/spring for fun, not as prep for the wedding), I'd rather wing it so we're not so conscious of getting the steps right. For the faster song we're recreating(ish) the dance from Pulp Fiction: You Never Can Tell by Chuck Berry. Most of that is twisting, the jerk, the swim so that's stuff we already know.

Only do choreography if you really know it well and won't be self conscious about it.

I'm not planning on dance lessons but I think you have time in between now and your wedding. you don't need to look professional, just learning a couple of dips and turns will be nice for your photos. Are you fairly coordinated? You could try googling around for some you tube videos to try and emulate and practice on your own

Well my SO has a bad back and I have a feeling he would totally veto this because he'll think it's stupid lol. I think it would be fun! Rachel, that's a good thought. We can just dance normal for most of and do a few little turns and dips and stuff to add some flair lol. Well see what he thinks

We did slow. Never rehearsed or anything. Ever one thought we did. He even dipped me twice.

Yeah, so if you do 'Can' Take My Eyes Off Of You' then I'm gonna need you to pull out all the stops and do the Heath Ledger version from 10Things I Hate About You. Idk how, but it would be legendary. Smiley winking

I wanted to do choreographed because I've been a dancer for years, but DH is NOT a dancer at all. We just swayed and honestly I had so many thoughts and emotions going through my head that I'm happy we went that route. It was nice to just be in the moment and relish in the "We did it! We're married!" feeling with my new husband.

You definitely have time to take a few lessons! We have chosen to do a semi-choreographed fox trot/swing first dance but even if we had just taken the first few lessons it would have helped us think about things like posture, spins, what would look good in pictures, etc.

We did a couple spins and a dip. Made it more exciting for people watching I think.

That's a great picture! I'm going to talk him into doing some spins and possibly a dip, don't know if that will be hard on his back or not. Probably so. yay I'm excited!

I can simple ballroom dance (grandfather insisted we all learn atleast a waltz) my FH can't even sway lol we are going to take lessons so he can be comfortable with spins and box steps.

You've got time! You can even practice at home.

Thank you! My cousin took that on his phone. Hopefully one of the photographers got the shot as well. I suggest just putting on the song and having a glass of wine and practice! We practiced once or twice and it was great. We did find that the song was super long. It got boring up there. HaHa! We just gave our DJ a look when we were over it and he shut it off.

We did a simple Texas two step! Husband doesn't dance much, but he's a quick study. We didn't fancy it up with any spins, but it was fun!

We did a simple slow dance but I wish we would have done something with simple choreography. I wouldn't have paid to attend lessons though. Probably would have just watched a youtube video or something.

We're not choreographing, but we have googled some dances moves. We don't want to just sway back and forth like at an awkward middle school dance.

We're starting dance lessons to just be a little better but not choreographing anything because I don't want to focus on the steps.

We're going to take lessons because I would really like to do more than the 8th grade sway at my wedding. lol The lessons are mostly so my FH can gain some confidence on the dance floor. I LOVE to dance, he doesn't because he's nervous and said he feels dumb. Plus it's another thing for us to do together. Smiley smile

Slow song (wonderful tonight, Eric Clapton), unchoreographed. My DH has two left club feet, with no rhythm (his words not mine). He did dip me and also pick me up so I'm sure we got some cute professional pics. Non pro attached

We are planning to do a normal slow dance for two main reasons.

    1) I'm not big into being in the spotlight as it is. To the point where we are likely not doing formal introductions at the reception. A choreographed dance would likely have me nervous all day.

    2) I think on the super hectic day, even with people watching, it would be nice to have that intimate moment with just my then husband and I. Choreography would have me thinking of moves instead of enjoying the moment. But that's just me.

If you and your spouse wanna do something choreographed, go for it!! But if it's purely a song choice thing, look back at the classics to see if that helps. The song doesn't have to be suuuuper slow. Is there a slower version of a song you could use instead of the original?

    Hope that helps!
