First Dance Mashups!

Chelsea, on December 13, 2017 at 2:16 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 15

My fiancé and I have been to quite a few weddings. Every one of the first dances was a total snooze fest (no offense to anyone doing the traditional first dance, it is just not our style). We want way more of a party vibe so we are thinking of doing one of those first dance mashups where the newlyweds dance for about a minute to a traditional slow song then break out into a series of fun party songs. We are hiring a choreographer to help us come up with some songs and moves. Has anyone else considered doing this versus a traditional first dance?

My dad and I did a fun dance. We surprised everyone. We took lessons and had a routine choreographed for us. We started with one song and after the first verse and chorus it switched to a fast song and we did our routine. It was a lot of fun Smiley smile

Your first dance as a couple is not what creates a party vibe. Your band or DJ does.

Why don't you have your first dance and then halfway through have the DJ invite other couples to join you and when the slow song is over switch to a fast one. That way a lot of people will already be up and more inclined to dance.

Seriously, the snooze fest was one of my most memorable moments of the night.

I think choreographed fast dances in particular, are extremely awkward to watch. I am embarrassed for the people.

    IMO choreographed dances are cheesey.

Choreographed dances can be super awkward to watch as a guest. If you really want to go this way, take dancing lessons to learn some moves and then just switch to a fast song and dance (without choreography). At least it won't look as forced

We are dancing to "our" song until the second chorus and then we are breaking into a song that, once "most" of our guests hear it, they will know it's time to get on the dance floor with us. We didn't want to do the entire song, I am not good with people staring & FH was too comfortable with it either for the full 3 minutes. It is a matter of taste, I always cry at weddings during the first dance, personally I think it's amazing for other couples.

If you're more of the dancer in the relationship and have a willing bridal party- check out this INSANE Beyonce choreo for inspiration. The girl is a professional dancer but it's honestly one of the cooler choreographed dances I've seen at a wedding.

We did a mashup of a Foxtrox, a Tango, a Salsa, and a modern dance. The guests seemed to enjoy it, but we had a death drop and some other interesting moves in there, so maybe that's why. We practiced for a year leading up to the wedding.

I didn't really feel like we missed out on our "first dance" moment, as we did a "last dance" at the end of the night when all of our guests had left the building. I loved it even more because it was just the two of us, dancing after an incredible night. It was perfect.

Ugh. My FH wants to take dance lessons so he can be more comfortable during our first dance and I am cringing just thinking about it. I would rather do the snoozefest high school sway than look like choreographed robots. I know some people are able to pull those dances off and have it look totally natural, but most can't and it is awkward AF to watch. I am so afraid to be the awkward AF couple.

@Taylor yes, I love that video and have watched it numerous times, but as you said, she is a professional dancer, actress, and singer. That's the key word, professional. An "average joe" couple is not going to pull that off like that.

That can be great! But I've been to poorly done "fun" dances which were ultimately very boring in the end. Keep the fun part to 2-3 minutes max and you should be golden!!!
