First Bridal Appointment Tomorrow!

Sinaya, on June 25, 2020 at 1:28 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21

I start shopping for my dress tomorrow! I'm excited, but I also feel super anxious about it. I'm feeling a little self-conscious about my tummy and I'm worried about being indecisive. I know people say you will know when it's the one, but I'm such an analyzer and over-thinker. I thought I wanted a more form fitting dress, but after going to a grand opening event for one of the boutiques earlier this year, and seeing some of the models in ball gowns, I realized I have no clue what I want in terms of silhouette. I'm bringing supportive people with me (Mom and MOH only) and both boutiques that I have appointments with this weekend have a vast selection of dresses for curvy/plus size women. So I know I'm good hands, I just need to get out of my own head, be open minded and enjoy the experience. Sigh....thanks for letting me vent.

It's a good idea to try on different styles ! that way you can figure out what you actually like and what makes you feel good, etc. i thought i always wanted a mermaid gown and when trying it on it actually didn't flatter me AT ALL. so i went with an A-line.

Yes that is what I plan to do. I'm trying to be opened minded about it. One of my bridesmaids told me that when she shopped for her dress she thought she would be getting an A-line gown because she didn't think a fitted dress would look good on her after having gained some weight. But she ended up going with something fitted and it looked great. So I'm trying not to have any expectations about what I think will look good.

The best advice I have is definitely be open minded. This may sound crazy - But I found pictures of (famous) people with similar body types and looked at their red carpet dresses - You'll find that a lot of stars wear wedding dresses (or similar style) dresses to the Oscars and such.

I had this vision in mind of what I wanted and ultimately ended up choosing a dress that I hesitated about, but ended up looking the best on me and found that was really my style.

You might not get a feeling that it’s the one and that’s ok. Try on different styles and see what makes you feel beautiful. Don’t put too much pressure on it, you’re only going to wear it one day and your guests and partner won’t even know what the other options were.

As long as you have supportive people there and a knowledgeable staff you'll be fine! I know because I have extreme anxiety and not very confident with myself. I went in with the intention of buying a ball gown style and actually HATED the way they looked on me, and was close to just leaving the store, but my lovely attendant pulled a dress off the rack and said that I might just love it and it was the one! She was able to understand my style and narrow it down without me even knowing! My dress is a-line lace strapless, something that I never thought in a MILLION YEARS I would want to wear! Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! I follow some plus size bridal pages on instagram to see models who have body types similar to mine. It helps to see women with my shape in different silhouettes.

LOL this was probably the best advice ever. No will know about the other options. And you're right, I think watching shows like Say Yes to the Dress add this pressure of "knowing" when it's the one and having an emotional connection to the dress.

I ended up choosing a style that Mindy Khaling wore to the Oscars this year.

That's awesome that you had an attendant that was really in tune with you and didn't let you give up! Thank you for sharing this.

I agree. Of course you want to look beautiful and it’s a special day, but I think tv has made it an overrated experience.

    - It was the ruched look and capped sleeve that sold me. Smiley smile

The white or gold dress for Cynthia Erivo? Both are fabulous

I was definitely happier the less pressure I put on myself! You're just starting the process, there's no pressure to find your dress at your first appointment or to have a tearful "it's the one" moment. I even told my mom to stop asking if I "felt like a bride" and just started focusing on "does this feel like me"!

I loved my dress when I first tried it on, but it still took me another week or two to make a final decision between a few favorites. I knew it was "the one" when I slept on it for a few nights and kept thinking about it. 🥰

I like the part about not focusing on if I feel like a bride, and instead focusing on does it feel like me. That's a whole new perspective I hadn't thought of. And yes I don't expect to make a decision right away. My MOH will be taking a lot of pictures for me to review in case I'm undecided about anything.

Let go of the pressure to “find the perfect dress”, “have a bridal moment”, or “say yes to the dress”. It is a piece of cloth, a very lovey, very expensive piece of cloth. It’s only job is to make you feel beautiful. It will not make you beautiful, you and your love will shine in those ways to a plush that goal. Go in with an open mind, and try on lots of styles! In times when I’m indescribable I use a rating scale for various aspects, that helps to organize my analytical thoughts. (Train of this dress is a 9, the neckline is a 6, the back is a 10, the material is an 8, etc)

I just purchased my dress! I think I probably tried on over 20 and ended up going back and purchasing the 2nd dress I tried on 🙈. I think it's important to just take your time! Don't feel like you have to buy something right away. Try on a few different styles and figure out what you like on your body and then you can decide on the details you like. It really helped me to try on all the other gowns. I always had the 2nd one in the back of my mind and trying it on again after a few weeks really solidified that it was the one I wanted. Juat take your time and trust your gut! And get what YOU love!

This is exactly why I wanted to start looking a little more than a year from the date. So I can really take my time. Thanks for this.
