Finding right ring size

Raye-Anne, on December 11, 2019 at 2:59 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

Has anyone else had trouble finding the right ring size?? I went to the Castle and they sized me as a 4 but the worker gave me a size 5 ring to try on and said my fingers would swell anyways and if I didn't like a 5 we could always get it resized. We loved the ring and decided to go with it. However, after getting home with the 5, I realized it was not going to work as is it was sliding off my finger. We went back the next day and asked to have it resized to a 4.5. Another worker sized my finger and said she thought 4.5 was too loose and that I would want my ring to be tight so I should go with a 4. I expressed that I felt a 4.5 was a better fit but she convinced me to go with a 4! Now, after we picked the ring with a size 4 I feel that its WAY too tight and that I should have went with a 4.5. I can slide the ring on easily and off with a little resistance but it is hurting my finger to wear the ring and tingles after I take it off. Everyone keeps telling me I just need to get used to it first.

What should I do? I am considering going back and asking them to resize it to a 4.5 but I want to be sure before I do. We have to pay every time we resize and I don't wanna be without my ring for that long! But at this point, I am not even able to enjoy wearing it.

I would go back and insist on a 4.5. When we got me sized, I was twenty pounds heavier and had swollen with the heat. It is true that you will fluctuate with the temps, but you still want it to be comfortable when you're sitting in room temperature. My ring is currently at least a half size too big - it spins on my finger even with a spacer to try and help it. I would try and ask for a ring in the right size to try on as opposed to their sizers. The ring sizer always seems to weigh down on your finger - my FH had the hardest time until they started giving him actual rings to try on. That was the only way we found to actually get a real size.

When I tried the 4.5 on with the ring sizer, it seemed to fit better than a 4 but the worker insisted a 4.5 looked too loose and I should go with a 4. I asked if she could find me a 4.5 ring in the store to try but she kept insisting I would want it to be tight. I should've went with my gut, but I felt like she knew more about it than me. I'm thinking I'm gonna have to go back once again! I can barely wear it as it is right now :/

Yes, go back. You want it to be tight but not too tight. I don't trust those sizers - when we first went in, she told me to get a 10.5. But when I got my ring, it was way too big. My FH pointed it out when we picked it up, but the lady and I argued you didn't want it too tight. Cut to ten minutes after he proposed, and I was watching it spin with every movement of my hand. I would go back and explain a 4.5 feels more right. Just make sure that's the right size because your ring does lose integrity with resizing.

Ask if they can do quarter sizes. Kay Jewelers offers quarter size. Mine is a 7, which is just a bit too big. It's not enough to slide off, but I'm worried to go down to 6.5 for when my fingers swell in the summer. Kay's offered to re-size it to 6.75. I haven't done it yet because I do know my fingers swell in the summer, and I'm afraid 6.5 would be too small during the summer.

Definitely don't "just get used to it". At least now it's smaller so it won't accidentally fall off, but you also don't want to cut off circulation to your finger or risk it getting super stuck to where you can't get it off at all.

I wouldn't recommend resizing your ring to a 4.5. Based on your original description, you said the ring doesn't have much resistance to slid off of your knuckle which means it is sized exactly how it should be. I've learned that rings should be sized to when they are your smallest to prevent them from spinning or sliding off. They should also take some work to get over your knuckle and off of your finger.

When you say that you take your ring off and your finger tingles, I wouldn't say that's the ring too tight. I think you are getting used to having it there. Or you could be having a slight reaction to a metal in/on the ring or a cleaner.

I got my ring as a size 5.5 this summer. It was a little loose so we got it resized right after down to a 5.25 and fit just fine. Fast forward to this winter and my ring was loose again and spinning around my finger. It's been resized to a 5. Then we may resize it if necessary when we get our wedding bands.

I think the 4 is too tight and that is why I wanted to go with a 4.5 since a 5 is too big. I have been trying to get used to the feeling of the ring, but when I am wearing it and after I take it off my finger hurts. From everything I've read/been told, this means the ring is probably too tight? I was also reading up about it being a reaction, but not sure how I'd figure that out.

How much resistance to you have when you take off your ring? I ask because of your comment about only having a little resistance to get your ring off (which is how it should be). My finger will hurt a little but sometimes if I just try to yank it off if it's snug. Generally, if I use a little water or soap it comes off a lot better.

I have to work it a little bit to get it off but not much resistance to get it off. At first, it felt fine and didn't really feel that tight. I can barely wear it right now because it is irritating my finger and hurts if I do try to wear it.

It may be worth it to go talk to another jeweler. Based on your description of getting it off, the ring is the right size for your finger but it's odd that it was fine and now irritates your finger and makes it hurt.

Sorry, if my advice really hasn't helped!

No thank you for the advice I appreciate it!
Once I picked the ring up from resizing I could tell it was a little tight but thought I’d get used to it. I am gonna go back and see what they think and if I would be best to resize to a 4.5. I was just trying to avoid if it possible
    Thank you!

I agree with the other poster who mentioned trying to find a place you can try on quarter sizes. The 4 does sound a little tight for you, you shouldn’t have a tingle, but a 4.5 might be too big and spin.

Personally my ring is probably a quarter size too big and it drives me crazy. We just bought my wedding band in a quarter size and if it fits perfectly I’m going to send in my engagement ring to get resized for the second time.

I went back to the castle this evening and tried on a 4.5 and it fit good so I went ahead and got them to send it to be resized. I’m praying this helps! Thank you.

I was reading that re-sizing too much isn't good for your ring. I'm a size 5, and in the summer it's pretty fit on my finger. Now that it's winter it's close to sliding off sometimes.

I didn't want to get it resized, only to resize it again close to the summer. I ended up getting these, and it works great! It doesn't look pretty, but no one is looking at your palms cause they want to see your ring.

It's only $5 and it comes in 2 big and 2 small sizes. I sent some to my sister cause she's got a loose e-ring due to the cold weather as well.

I wish I would have tried this when I had my ring size 5! But we just went back the next day after getting it & decided to go ahead with resizing it. I’ve also read that resizing too much isn’t good for the ring so I’m hoping a 4.5 works out! Thank u

I ended up having to get a quarter size from Kay's, too! I had no idea they even made those. My 4.25 is absolutely near perfect for my small fingers!
