filet vs. prime rib

Taryn, on April 15, 2014 at 8:17 PM Posted in Planning 1 17

I thought I knew exactly what I wanted for meal at the wedding which was filet mignon. But when I had the tasting I thought the prime rib was a lot better. I'm not sure if it's because filet wasn't as red as I like it. Filet is $9 more a person. I have a chicken option also but not sure if more people prefer filet or prime rib better. Any suggestions?

Personally I prefer filet, but do what's right for your budget and whatever you like better. I would enjoy either at a wedding.

We have the option between filet and prime as well. We decided on prime rib because the venue recommend the filet on the bloody side and can't accommodate different ways of how well done (medium, well done). Since not everyone likes bloody steak, we decided on prime rib which is cooked more.

Prime rib- because if you thought the filet was a bit overdone, a lot of your guests might think so too. Especially since men seem to like their meat rare.

Filet is a nicer portion, it looks better on the plate, perceived as more elegant, and your guests don't have to wrestle with the bone when they are all dressed up.

This notion that the venue is going to serve it bloody and that's it is crap; any piece of meat can be cooked to med rare for the crowd and then made more cooked for those who want it.

I prefer Filet, but Hubby prefers Prime Rib. Truthfully, I would eat either and enjoy it.

Has anyone had their wedding at Black Swan Country Club in Georgetown MA and had either prime rib or filet?

I'm a meat girl, so either would be fine, but I'd choose filet over chicken, chicken over prime rib.

Prime rib is a cheap cut of meat. If u can afford it go with the filet mignon. It will be more elegant and not just a slab of fatty beef on the plate. It will impress as well. If u can afford it. Go for it.

If you like the meat more rare than they made it, ask them to do that for you. As Celia said, if the meat is not cooked enough for someone, we can correct that on the spot.

Either cut is a treat on a wedding menu. However, I'm not surprised you liked the prime rib more than the filet mignon. The filet comes from the tenderloin, and like the name implies, it is the most tender cut of meat. However, it doesn't have a lot of natural flavor. That's why chefs tend to wrap it in bacon, serve it in seasoned butter, or using various sauces. It's also incredibly lean, and while that makes it a healthier choice, it doesn't make it a tastier choice unless it's seasoned.

The prime rib, when properly prepared, is absolutely delicious, and beef lovers appreciate this cut. It comes from the ribeye, and this is where you get the best tasting cuts of meat. It's tender and flavorful, and I always chose it at weddings when it's an option.

Also, the filet is neater to eat, but it's a smaller looking portion. Both are considered upscale choices, and both can be prepared to perfection. My choice would be prime rib, and if you've tasted the venue's version of both and find the prime rib the better tasting option, then that's the way you should go.

If it taste better and cheaper, go for prime rib. It's all about how it's prepared. I usually prefer a filet (if there wasn't a seafood option-I like seafood!), but my husband would choose the prime rib.
