FH's Wedding Band - Meteor/Dinosaur

Pancakes, on November 14, 2014 at 2:10 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16

FH found on reddit that there was a men's wedding band on Etsy that was made with meteorite and fossilized dinosaur bone. I just saw the post about wedding bands and noticed 2 or 3 people talked about these types of rings.

My question is: Where did you get them?! The one on Etsy I found was about $1,100 and comes with a carbon dating certificate. (FH is a Chemical Engineer so he or his friends actually has the means to carbon date something, as well) But I am slightly hesitant to pay $1,100 for something off Etsy. But, as I always say, something is worth as much as you are willing to pay. Meaning, if it makes FH smile and get excited every day looking at it because it's a freaking meteorite and dinosaur ring, then it's worth $1,100. But I just want to make sure I go through all of my options before buying that one. Thanks!

Etsy is SUPPOSED to be handmade items, so i find it hard to believe some one has a stash of dinosaur bones and meteorites they are crafting with and aren't selling it through a legit high end store. i've toyed with the idea and thats the basic response i've gotten from everyone. no certification and i doubt museums are letting dinosaur bones get hacked into rings. (i would imagine?)

its cool for the novelty, but unless someone can prove it, its just that. but sometimes novelty is nice.

Andi makes a great point...without any certification of any kind I wouldn't be spending my money

That was my first though Andi, is that why does he have dinosaur bone? The listing says they are fossilized dinosaur bones remains. So he doesn't actually have a dinosaur bone that he is chipping away at. Idk. This is what part of the listing says:

"Agatized dinosaur bone is the result of fossilized bone from dinosaurs in which the cellular

structure has been replaced by quartz leaving the bone structure intact. Dinosaur bone

ranges in color from brown to black with splotches of red, blue and yellow. The coloring is the

result of impurities that were around in the surrounding sediment.

Dinosaur Bone is scarce therefore Dinosaur Bone colors cannot be guaranteed as pictured when your ring is made.

From the Morrison Formation in Utah which covers 600,000 square miles over several states, found to be the most fertile source of dinosaur fossils in North America. These specimens date back to the Jurassic Era, minimum 65 million years ago. It has petrified into stone as jasper and agate as it fossilized."

So I'm skeptical, though he does have rave reviews and it says it includes a carbon dating certificate. But if there is a reputable store I could get one from, I would obviously prefer that. I just don't know where I would find a store to go to! FH is just un-impressed with all of the rings he has seen in jewelry stores. I want him to be happy with his ring like I am with mine.

I looked into the Dinosaur ones. Ours would be done by someone my MOH knows who is a retired paleontologist. There is a place in Utah that supplies the bone fragments to jewelry makers. I looked up as much as I could on the place in Utah and everything I've found says that it's legit. My FH is contemplating one now as well.

Edit to add I know some places will authenticate it and say if you take it somewhere and they claim it's a fake you can get your money back.

Thanks JaKLyn. Does the place in Utah that you know of have a website? I believe this guy's Etsy listing did mention that he gets his material from Utah.

From what i researched, its not the bone though. its "gembone" the quartz fills in the cellular structure "cracks and marrow areas etc" to replace the bone. its still cool as hell but its not actual dinosaur bone. but if he loves it, then more power to him.

"The permineralization process involves the replacement of natural bone (hydroxyapatite) by various minerals. In select situations, fossilized dinosaur bone, rather than being replaced by ironstone or other such materials, is replaced by chalcedony or cryptocrystalline quartz (synonymous with polychrystalline quartz in Great Britain), an aggregate of microscopic quartz crystals. When this chalcedony is translucent and possesses patterns or bands, it is referred to as agate, with dinosaur bones so permineralized referred to as agatized dinosaur bone, dinosaur gembone, or simply gembone."

I was curious so I looked into how common dinosaur bones are, and I guess the reason you can buy the rings etc is because there are a lot of "common" dinosaurs that are fossilized that aren't of much use to scientists. Especially if they are fragments of common species. I don't think you would need large pieces for rings.

    Kind of interesting anyway

Yeah, we know it's not actually a dinosaur's bone. FH is much more intelligent than I am so he knows the specifics of what it actually is. But when he talks about it, he gets a goofy smile on his face like a toddler in a candy store and screams "But it's a fricken meteor and dinosaur bone." So, like you said, if he likes it, more power to him Smiley smile I just want to see if there are more places to buy them than just this Etsy listing. So I was hoping to get advice on places where I could look (online or maybe large jewelry store chains).

    Thanks everyone, so far!

I just heard about these yesterday on here!! I told FH about it and then we were talking about whether or not you could do the same with a chicken bone without anyone knowing ha ha. Seriously though, who just has a bunch of dinosaur bone kicking around to make rings out of?

ETA: I've read the rest of the comments that were posted and now it makes more sense. Got busy at work mid-posting!

Kathleen, I'm at work right now so I don't have the info on me. I'll send you a message later tonight once I'm home if that works for you. I just remember seeing that the formation itself spreads from Utah to Colorado and that the particular gembone he had was from Utah, which led me to look more into that.

Theres a store on etsy that specializes in awesome rings like this. Micherandritcher i think its called? I have a few rings saved in my favourites but it would be a pain to access on my phone right now. All their rings are beautiful!

I have found a few places to buy them other than Etsy, but they were all sketchy so we are probably just going to buy them on Etsy, my FH wants the meteorite one. I can't figure out how you could ever legitimately confirm or deny that it was real without paying lots of money, so for us it is kinda a novelty thing, If he wants to say that is what it is and doesn't care if its authentic or not, why not buy it on etsy?

    Thanks, JacKLyn!

And the good thing is that we actually know people who CAN verify it Smiley smile The perks of having friends who almost all work in chemical plants that have access to industrial equipment to do those types of things Smiley smile But it's the fact that we can only date it after we buy it, obviously we don't have it in person before buying. But I was thinking, since it makes FH SO happy, why would I care if it's real or not. If it makes him that happy then I am happy to pay it. Then he'll stop making fun of me for being so gah-gah over my ring Smiley smile

How long would it take them to date it? I know some places I saw say if you aren't happy with it within x amount of days you can return it.

So glad you posted this, I'm thinking about it too! I didn't like the dinosaur bone for the same reason, but some can put an antler from a deer FH killed in the ring.. typing that out it doesn't sound romantic AT ALL but he would freaking love it.
