Feeling out of place?? Follow your heart!! 💜

I definitely know that my finace and I are in the minority when it comes to wedding planning. We are NOT following the wedding industry rules at all. We decided on a small budget, no wedding party, intimate ceremony with just our immediate family, no DJ, no giant cake, no alcohol, no registry, and a small honeymoon. I am wearing a simple white gown in an old world style and he is going to purchase a suit he can wear again.
For a while, I felt extremely out of place. The wedding industry made me feel like a bug fat failure because I didnt spend hundreds or even thousands on my dress, venue, and all those other things that we are told are necessary to have a great wedding and therefore a great marriage.
We are following our hearts. We have always wanted a REAL old fashioned wedding and it is happening. We are going to get married in 89 days!!
I guess my point is, follow your heart!!!! If you fall in love with a white cocktail dress then rock it on your wedding day. Want cookies instead of cake? Do it! Want to elope? Go for it!! Listen to your heart and your partner, not the industry. And remember, it is just ONE DAY!! Your wedding should be a celebration of your LOVE and life together! Not about impressing others. Be happy!

I soooo agree with you! Your wedding vision sounds very close to how my wedding was and I couldn't have imagined it any other way. It was the most amazing, perfect day!

It's funny that that was your perspective because as I started researching weddings yes there are plenty of people that will tell you to spend all this money but I started seeing various ways to have a small budget and all of that and just you and everything that I saw here kind of made it seem like a lot of people are going away from old wedding traditions. I feel like there's a lot of pushback on how weddings once were in terms of budget or even just in terms of how to dress. I have seen various Brides on here say that they definitely won't wear white and some will wear black. I agree with you you need to do what's going to make you and your fiance happy as ultimately it is both of your day. Good luck with the rest of wedding planning.

CONGRATS to you for planning a wonderfully personal wedding... and I agree with your post.

I come to the WW forums for the wedding planning entertainment. But I see so many brides constantly trying to recreate whatever they find on the Internet or in a bridal magazine. So then everyone has a completely cloned looking style for their wedding day... from their bouquet, to their hairstyle, to their wedding colors, to their dress, to all the signage and decor etc. It’s the same ‘ol thing. I often wonder, where is THEIR personality in any of that. A wedding is one of those times when you get to be expressive and design everything from A-to-Z.
But sadly, I see brides who are stressed out trying to put together a “dream” wedding that they can’t actually afford. Or they’re trying to toss together a cheap “proposal“ box of trinkets, even though they don’t have the extra money. However it’s a MUST on their checklist because it’s what everyone else is doing.

FH and I also aren’t having a bridal party are doing a wedding that is unique and completely our style.... From the unusual venue, to the color schemes (which completely switches from ceremony to reception), to our fun entertainment choices, our uncommon STDs/invitations, decor and more.
Some people might think that our wedding isn’t “wedding-ish” enough. But that’s exactly what makes it so perfect!!! 😉

    I love this!

I definitely feel that way here. I do come on to read what others are posting because it's helping me plan my sister's wedding which is a lot bigger than my small intimate one. It's also good to read what others have done to help come up with any ideas for mine.

Our wedding is very unconventional because it's also very small. There's a total of 10 of us, but our budget is as if we're having 150+ guests because we are flying everyone out and getting their hotel rooms. I haven't read of anyone else doing that here on WW.

But, I am very happy with my small wedding and can't wait for the day to come...41 more days!

I feel this so hard. Why do people take it so personal when you tell them youre not doing their favorite part of a wedding like father/ daughter and other forced dances? Imo 90% of wedding dresses look the exact same and I dont see the point in crying over an expensive dress youll wear once. Sometimes I feel like a bad bride for not buying into that hype and going for something I genuinely like. Dont get me started on how many times people keep telling me its a woodland wedding, as if I had like 5 options to choose from?

I’m with you all. I can’t imagine having 10 bridesmaid and expecting them to kiss my feet as queen for the day. Yes I’m buying a big fluffy princess gown because you know what. I’m 60 years old and I want one. But I’m getting invites, flowers, etc from Sams or Costco, it’s close friends and family, no flower girl. All low key. It’s just going to be a great party.

Omg...you guys are my people! Everywhere I turn I'm getting backlash from other people on wedding forums or in general conversation when they ask me about wedding things. They give me crap because I'm having 2 MoH and an almost 21 year old flower girl, $5k budget for 160 guests, using friends and family (who have volunteered their services) as vendors, no DJ, self catering, no speeches, no forced dancing, no tosses etc, etc. Pretty much everything that every wedding planning checklist says don't do. We are very casual, low key people. We want our wedding to reflect that. It's basically going to be a backyard bbq mixed with a concert that just happens to have a wedding thrown in for good measure. I'm not the type of person who has had my big fancy wedding planned since I was 3 or who is trying to out "pinterest" the rest of the world or who will spend any amount of money to have the fairytale wedding everyone and their brothers think I should have. We cut out everything that wasn't important to us. I'm not spending a crap ton of our money (or anyone elses for that matter) on ridiculous things just because the over priced wedding industry says I should. The social media weddings are fine for those people but I would rather spend the time and the effort and the money on our marriage, or a house, or a new car, or an adventure...
