Feeling like an ugly bridesmaid :(

AG, on February 18, 2018 at 12:23 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

Well, I'm going to be a bridesmaid in my friend's wedding in June and my dress just came in. It's not..awful, but it's definitely not my style, and definitely not my color (a really vibrant turquoise). I also just got my hair trial done for my own wedding (which I'll be wearing down), but since I have to wear it up for her wedding I figured I would just ask my hair stylist to quickly turn it into an updo since I've never worn my hair up before besides to the gym or the occasional friday bun. Let's just say I do NOT look cute with my hair up. It's just not flattering. She also bought us matching necklaces to wear and I just honestly think its ugly. There's 5 other bridesmaids and they're all pretty beautiful, so I feel like I have no chance looking good next to all of them since we'll all look exactly the same dress/hair-wise, but they'll pull it off better.

I would never complain to her since it's her day and its honestly just a style preference and not her fault I look bad with my hair up, it just really sucks knowing I'm going to look bad (at least to me) in all of her forever wedding photos. I'm just reminding myself that my wedding is in September and I'll look good for that at least!

Anyone else ever been a bridesmaid with a not great dress or hairstyle?

I don't have one of my hair and don't want to post the dress in case someone else is using it, but its like a turquoise mini dress with one one shoulder strap made of flowers..it just reminds me of my freshman prom dress or something, I think its kind of dated and not very now. The issue with my hair is that I really need face framing pieces, but the front of my hair is currently as long as the rest of my hair (the way I like it), and I don't want to cut it for her wedding because mine is two months later and it took me forever to grow those pieces out, but it looks really bad with like two super long pieces hanging in the front. First world problems I guess!

Is this how your dress looks? It was my junior prom dress lol.
But in all seriousness, I totally understand the hair thing. I look like a chunky baby boy with my hair up. Is there any way you can have it in a lower bun, that way it’s still up but still frames the face?
Im sure you’ll look beautiful, don’t worry about it!

What if you ask her to wear your hair the way you prefer? Maybe she’d let you?

I know it’s tough when you feel like you’re not looking your best for an event where LOTS of photos will be taken. Just remember that this is your friend’s vision for her special day. Feel free to make suggestions to her! Maybe she never considered that not everyone would look good with the same style. But if she says that that’s how she wants it after you politely ask, then I would just leave it there.

If it doesn’t work out, maybe you should hire a makeup artist for their wedding so you could have the focus be on your pretty face!

You could politely ask if you could wear our new hair done since it’ll make you feel more comortable. However if she says no you kind of just have to go with it.

One of my best friends made us change our hair part and made me get rid of my bangs!!!

I didnt feel great and dreaded the whole thing hole thing as well. However, once the ceremony and pics were over I went and pulled my bangs out and felt better for the reception. Also, I used it as a chance to do way more makeup and pull out other features.

it stinks but it taught me for my wedding to do I think differently. Which is why I let my girls pick all their own individual dresses and hair styles.

Hii I would suggest you speak to the bridesmaids and tell her how you feel , the day of the wedding you don’t want to feel the way your feeling because you want to enjoy her special day with her and secondly it will show on camera how uncomfortable you are in the dress

I've never understood bride's requiring their BMs to wear their hair the same way. I feel the same way about my hair being up. I told my BMs to wear their hair however they're comfortable.

I totally get the hair thing! I have very thin hair and I always look like I'm balding if I put it up. It just looks super weird.

But since it's your friends day, you'll just have to bear with it all. You may not look as bad as you think! Hopefully things turn out okay

Hahaha oh gosh yes basically its just an a-line! It's really not a bad dress, but you understand the prom feeling I'm getting lol. I think I have pretty free range of what kind of updo I want, so I'm going to look for something that is technically up but very loose haha hopefully that will hep!

That's also the thing, its not being paid for. An updo is a requirement, but the specific style isn't, so I think thats why she's not paying. I'm going to practice doing it myself because I really can't afford it but I might end up with a ponytail. That's also part of whats upsetting me!

Is she specifying the type of undo? I also HATE the way I look with my hair up and I was told do so in 4 out 5 of the weddings I was in. Could you do a loose undo? I find those are way more flattering on me. Something like this?

Oh yeah! That’s basically what the lady had to do. I felt so uncomfortable until after the pictures when I got to at least pull my bangs out. I get some people want similar styles but it was extreme. Love the girl to death though. But that’s exactly what made me decide to not require any type of style.

This is 100% why I am allowing my girls to do any hair style they want and pick whatever dress they like within our colors! Ugh I’m so sorry this is happening to you 😫

Maybe have a few long pieces out in the front, but see if your stylist can do some kind of pin curl to pull it up a little so it's not *quite* as long? This is the exact reason why I'm wearing my hair DOWN at my wedding, so I feel your pain!!
