Feeling discouraged after first visit to dress shop

Neena, on August 31, 2019 at 9:36 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7
I came home in tears today after my first dress appointment. It wasn’t so much about not finding “the one” but more about how uncomfortable I felt in everything I put on. My body image issues came out and I became critical of everything and found something I disliked about every dress. The consultant told me my taste is very modest but I’m almost embarrassed by that. I don’t want to be seen as boring or too serious. Plus modest doesn’t go with my theme. I’m so conflicted. Everything modest I tried on I was comfortable in but it didn’t feel bridal and and had no wow factor. I feel so discouraged

I'm so sorry you didn't have the best experience. There's nothing plain or boring about a modest dress! I would try another bridal salon and take some time to think about what you truly want in a dress Smiley smile

I had a very similar experience during my second appointment-my first time looking was “OK,” but my second try was awful. I ended up finding a really amazing boutique that has an amazing vibe. Keep looking and try not to get discouraged! For me, having a truly amazing consultant really did make a world of difference!

My dress was very modest and some people probably thought it was aging me or something dumb, but I felt so classy and beautiful. Trust yourself and go with what makes you feel good

If you think about it, Kate and Meghan wore modest dresses and we all ooh'd and ahh'd over their looks. If you feel more comfortable in something that covers a bit more, then lean toward that with an open mind for other options you may not have considered. You can bring wow factor with your accessories too. Once YOU feel beautiful in your dress, you will look beautiful. Bridal is whatever the bride wants to look like on her day. It isn't always lace, or white, or even a big gown. Good luck out there!

I had 6 appointments before I found the dress. Never give up bring positive people around you. Even if you have to try on 40 dresses like me 😅

My first dress shopping experience was just OK. The consultant pulled the dress that ended up being "the one" but seemed distracted during my appointment with the going-ons in the salon. I ended up going to a different bridal salon for my second dress shopping appointment and the customer service was exceptional. Please consider trying a different bridal salon to find a consultant you are more comfortable with. It's also good to keep an open mind if they recommend you try a silhouette you hadn't considered before. I feel they work with so many brides that they have some experience knowing what may look good on different body types. Good luck!

One thing that really helped me was to only try on dresses that were my actual size. It was incredibly frustrating to have an employee show me a dress i loved, but was a size 6, so they had to half zip, add temporary fabric panels, etc. I couldn't get a sense of what it would really look like and just felt super uncomfortable about my body. Once I started only looking at my size samples, it helped so much.
