Favorite Wine Brands

Nichole , on March 15, 2018 at 5:46 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 13
Hey guys
I am trying to decide what brands/ kinds of wine to offer. I don't drink but FH's family drinks a lot of wine so I want to pick something good but not expensive. I'm thinking Verdi as my bubbly option and two reds and two whites. We will also be serving beer and a few signature drinks. Any suggestions?

Were doing apothic red for our red option. It’s a blend, that most people I know like. You could look into local wineries around you to see what they have. We always try to buy local when we can, so I don’t know a ton of national brands. Most offer case discounts as well. Honestly, most people I know, even heavy wine drinkers, pay more attention to the kind of wine than the brand. As for kinda, Chardonnay is usually good for white, and Cabernet for red. Those are probably the most common. Red blends seem to becoming more popular too.

For red: Cabernet and Shiraz/Syrah or Pinot Noir. For white: Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay. You might want to switch out one of your whites for a Rose. I’d skip the Verdi and go with a nice Prosecco, perhaps Pizzolato 2016 Fields Brut.

You will want a heavy red such as a Cabernet, Syrah, or Zinfandel, and you want a light red such as a Pinot noir or a red blend. Good mid-price range brands are Coppola, Mark West, Joel Gott, as PP’s said Apothic is good for blends.

For your whites you will want one crisp and dry white, a Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio and one sweeter white, either a Rose or Riesling. One of my favorite rieslings is Kung Fu Girl, it’s unique and very reasonably priced. Other good options are are Chateau St Michelle, Cupcake, Menage a Trois, And Oyster Bay.

I agree with PP's. My friends and I have wine and game night almost every week and Apothic, Menage a Trois, and 13 Hands have been universal favorites. You can get a dang good price for all 3 at Costco as well.

We are doing 2 reds a heavier (cab or merlot), a lighter (pinot noir) and 2 whites wines...a dry one and some sugar water (riesling).

If you go to a wine shop or liquor store (where the people know about these things) you can tell them your budget and how much you need and they can recommend wines that are broadly liked in your budget. I have done this in ordering wine for events and haven't been disappointed- even by $6 bottles. But I agree with others that a Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio works for white and a Cabernet and Shiraz or Pinot Noir works for red options. My wedding is in the summer so I am including a Vihno Verde as a white option.

La Crema has a really good pinot noir and chardonnay. I also really like Sterling's red blend and chardonnay.

If you want a dessert wine that's decent priced, I would go for Cupcake moscato.

I've had a lot of discussion around this too! We've been struggling with different tastes and price ranges. I am a certified wine specialist and tried to come up with some criteria for selecting wines here: https://www.readbetweenthewines.net/blog/2018/6/22/choosing-wine-for-your-wedding-our-top-picks

I am going to a bunch of tastings this week and will let you all know what we choose! Costo is also a great place to shop for wines and you can return everything you don't use.
