Favor Suggestion for 12 Y.o. on the Spectrum

Cathy, on July 26, 2019 at 9:20 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 9
So, I will have 4 neurotypical kids (all between 7 and 9) at the wedding reception, and I plan to get them "kids favor boxes" to keep them busy during the reception (wedding activity book, cookie favor, lego pack etc). One of my bridesmaids has a 12 year old son who is mildly on the spectrum (12, but social ability is about 9 ish). Since he is older, I was going to get him a favor that was more appropriate for an older child, but since his neurocognitive age is about the same as the other kids, I was debating about getting him the same things as the other kids. Any ideas?

Tricky! Legos are pretty good for all ages. Same with coloring activities, just may need to change subject matter to be more unique! If he is developmentally the same it could be okay to get similar activity gifts. A way to not single him out would be to have variety across all of the kiddos

Another thing would be to consult the parents! They will know best and probably offer great suggestions. Very sweet of you

As a special education teacher, I just have to say how thoughtful you are. I'd just ask his parents. Kiddos to you!

This is so kind and sweet for you to ask! As PPs said, talk to the parents. I'm sure they'll be touched Smiley heart

I agree with Keri, I would talk to his parents and ask what he enjoys. Children on the spectrum are unique from one another, their preferences and developmental ranges vary. Many parents enjoy when people inquire about their children, so I think it would be a kind gesture to ask. It’s also very kind if you to contemplate this and reach out for ideas, way to make a difference!

    Hey,

I agree with Heather and Keri, ask his parents what sort of activities he enjoys.

I think the stuff you have picked out for the other kids might work but you can just ask his parents too.

If he gets something different, it would be because of his age, and not his ability. I don't know much he would enjoy coloring a little 5x7 book with stickers! I am thinking of getting him a coloring book that has more text to it so his Mom can use it to practice reading.

I agree- consult with the parents. One of our child guests is also on the spectrum so we'll be consulting with mom and dad about what would be best to include in his goody bag.
