Favor help!

Christine, on June 28, 2019 at 11:20 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 13

I'm having my wedding ceremony/cocktail hour/reception at a local herb farm and am not doing big centerpieces, just a mix of small pumpkins, candles in holders and herbs or succulents (depending on pricing and availability from the farm) and was hoping to give the succulents/herb plants away as a favor so they can do double duty. A lot of my people love the idea, but now I'm second guessing myself because a number of people are flying in. It really does fit my theme/style and I have no idea what else I could use as an inexpensive favor that isn't too typical. We've invited around 130 people. Any and all suggestions are welcome, thank you!

My future stepbrother in law & his wife did this at their reception. They had people driving in (really no one flying in besides 1 or 2) and they had SO many leftover. People were staying in hotels, driving, flying, or just didn't take one because they didn't garden. So if you do them, I'd buy way less than your guest list and maybe have another option easier to fly with like seeds or something!

For my bridal shower my mom and my sister (MOH) are making herb infused olive oil and putting them in little bottles. That way they are small enough to take on a plane as a liquid.

I would suggest sealing them in baggies so they don't leak.

@Melle : Thanks for the option, but my FH and I along with a lot of our friends/guests are in recovery so something alcohol related is definitely out.

@Lauren, for my shower we're doing mason jars with seed packets and mini tote bags, but that sounds like a wonderful idea! Not sure if I could swing it for all of my wedding guests, but I'll keep it in mind as an option, I've also thought of doing jars of honey.

@FutureMrsD : thanks for the reply, I'd hate to have leftovers, although the farm might buy them back. I'd also hate for most people to not want to take the favor. I'm doing seed packets for my bridal shower (inside of mason jars with mini tote bags) so I don't think I'd do that again for the wedding. Maybe I'll scrap the "plant themed" idea and see what little jars of honey or as Lauren suggested, herb infused oil would cost.

I would just skip formal favors and let people take centerpieces home if they want. No offense, but it would seem a little cheap to tell your guests that your centerpieces are their favors.

True! If they would buy them back, that would be great! My fiance's stepmother ended up keeping all the extras, she has a large succulent garden anyway. I think edible favors are always nice, especially small ones that can be flown with! I'm not sure how flying with honey would work if someone carried their bag on, so maybe read about that before doing it? We did herb infused oil for my bridal shower, my mom bought these small glass jars to put each in. Again, I think it would be hard to fly with though.

Does the farm sell any kind of herb mixes? Something like a packet of herbs or an herb/spice mix with ingredients from the farm could be fun, and should be fine for your flying guests.

@Sara: That's a great idea, I know they do have a little shop where they sell stuff that has been made from the farm, I'll have to check there and also will check with the owner to see if she'd be willing/able to whip something up if it's not already available. Thanks!

I bet the oil would be very inexpensive to make. You get your olive oil in bulk, like at Costco. Then you could get the little bottles in bulk through either Dollar Tree online, or Oriental Trading Company. Make two or three different kinds of infused oil, and when they are ready, pour them into the little bottles. You can also get custom labels pretty cheap through Oriental Trading, or custom ribbons.

That's exactly what we did. Each bottle is maybe an ounce. So a gallon of oil from Costco would do. My mom has a huge rosemary bush in the front yard so they just cut off some pieces and put it in the oil for a month. I think my sister got the bottles on amazon.

And if there are leftovers you can just take it home and use it.
