Father/daughter Dance Alternatives

Stephanie, on March 6, 2018 at 8:20 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 9
Looking for suggestions for alternatives to the father/daughter dance. My father has a pretty hard time getting around these days. Because of this I'm not sure a father/daughter dance is the best idea or even safe for him to participate in. It breaks my heart a little to even think about not doing a father/daughter dance but I have to think about my father's health first. I have not spoken to him yet about it as I fear he will think he's letting me down if he doesn't think he can participate. I was hoping to propose a couple of nice alternatives to him when having a conversation about it. Thanks in advance!

I was browsing the internet and found a few ideas. Some I like more than others:

    -Skip parent dances all together

-Dedicate a song to the both of you and sit with him while you guys listen

    -Honor him in a toast/speech

-Play a slideshow of photos of you and him together (with a song)

-Play a shortened version of a song and stand up with him while it plays

-If you can play an instrument/sing, perform for him (or with him if he can join in)

-Start dancing with your dad, then rotate with other important men in your life (brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, etc.) and end the dance with your father

Thank you! I do like some of those ideas. I thought about doing a dance with my almost 6 year old nephew instead but I like the idea of rotating the dance (starting with my dad, then my nephew, then back to my dad).

He doesn't have to breakdance. If he would be well enough to stand in place and kind of sway for a minute or two while the song plays, and you could rotate with a few other guys as well I think that would be great. If he truly can't then don't ask it of him, but it will probably mean as much to him as it does to you. Can you have a brother or someone stand close by, just in case he needs help getting to a chair quickly or something? Not sure just how mobile he really is.

He can definitely stand for a song, especially if he's holding on to me; it's the swaying part I'm not sure of. I know it will mean just as much to him as to me, just trying to adapt it to be safe for him. I definitely have some good ideas now to suggest as alternatives. Thanks!

I just wanted to say thanks for providing this list. Of course now I'm going to have to do a speech for both of my parents because if I do one for my dad and not my mom it will make my mom feel left out but I love the speech and slide show thing.

Also, Stephanie, I totally understand how you feel. My father is older and I just don't think he would be up for dancing, he really can't stand for that long, although he might be able to sway. I hope you find something that you are able to do with him that is special.

Could you maybe put together a father daughter slideshow/video? Then watch it while sitting together?

Hi All - I'm Martin Goddard from Music HQ . We provide live wedding bands to hundreds of weddings every year and have noticed that this is becoming a very popular feature here in the UK. It's very interesting to read these comments. I am about to write a blog entry about this very subject over on our Blog page. I'll post the link back here when it's done to see what you all make of it.
