Father of the Bride’s Suit

Carissa, on January 6, 2019 at 7:01 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10
Hi everyone!

So today my dad sprung on me that he wants to buy a suit for my wedding that will compliment my mom’s dress as well as make him stand out from the rest of the men in the bridal party. Prior to this conversation I assumed my dad would be renting a suit since FH, his dad, the groomsmen, the ushers, and the ring bearer are all renting the same suit from Savvi.

Has anyone else ever done this? I was under the impression that normally all the men would have the same suit.

Father of the bride doesn’t need to match the groomsmen. Parents can wear whatever they are comfortable in.

Hi Carissa! I have seen the FOB wear a different suit before, to be offset from the rest, as with the best man and/or groom sometimes, too. They are typically still cohesive with the color palette and the rest of the bridal party's attire.

Are you preferring that all of the men match in the suits from Savvy? What color/style did your father have in-mind for his suit?

I had just envisioned that they all would match. Most of the weddings I’ve been to everyone matched so I assumed it was what normally happens.

He doesn’t have anything in mind because he’s waiting until my mom finds her dress. If I had to imagine it will probably be gray or black knowing his style. The suits from Savvi are tan, so I’m hoping he decides on something lighter to go along with that.

Fathers definitely don't have to wear the same suit as groomsmen. If he wants to wear something special I say let him go for it.

I agree! Let your dad and mom do their thing! I actually think it’s cute! Just because “tradition”, norms, or who/whatever else says they have to match, doesn’t mean they have too!

I have our entire group match, grooman & parents are all doing classic black tux with white shirt and black bow tie so I like the clean look of it. FFIL had a little hard time as he expected he’ll buy a suit on his own but I explained it and he understood. FH would be the only one different but would match the guys as well.
I think is up to you if you want to have them all look the same. Talk to him and explain this and see what he says.

Just like the mother's won't be wearing BM dresses, the father's don't need to match the GM. They're not part of the wedding party. I've honestly never seen the father's match the GM and anything they wear will look cohesive anyway as men's suits tend to be neutrals

Our father's wore their own suits. It looked fine. Let him wear what he's comfortable in.

Hmm that makes perfect sense, Carissa! Hmm that's a tough situation. I do agree with the others, he will look handsome and formal regardless of what he wears beside your mother.
