Father of the Bride gift - I'm stumped!!

McD to McC, on June 30, 2018 at 7:26 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

Ok, I'm completely stumped as to what to get my dad. He's always been hard to buy for. I mean, since I was a kid I was told if it wasn't socks or underwear (and a very specific style/brand) he didn't want it.

The back story wedding-wise, is I'm not having my him walk me down the aisle. I've talked it out with him and it's all good. I don't want to be "given away" and he doesn't want to "give me away". On another note, he's totally anti-marriage (he and my mom have been divorced for like 32 years now) and I don't want that juju walking me down the aisle.

Personalized beer glasses are the easy go-to, everyone can use a glass, but I want something more sentimental than that. So for my mom, I'm getting us matching little bracelets we can both wear, so it's like she's with me during the ceremony. I'd like to do something similar for my dad. Something we can both have on us as a little sort of connection through the day. Here's where I'm stuck. He's a VERY casual guy. No tie bars, cufflinks, hankies, etc. Sooooo, maybe something that would go on his key chain and I could wear as jewelry? Something to keep in his wallet or pocket that I can tuck/pin into my dress somewhere? I'm wearing sneakers, so maybe matching socks with a note that even though he's not walking me down the aisle, he'll be walking with me the whole day. Or is that gross b/c it's on your feet?

Has anyone done anything like this? I'm desperate for ideas!

Actually the sock idea sounds really cute. Especially since you've always had to gift him socks lol

I got my dad an iron on patch for the back of his tie. Would that work? It’s not something that you can wear too but you could write something sentimental? Good luck!

He seems like practical gifts would be best, so a tie or socks may be the best ideas for him. Splurging on a nice tie whenever he needs one would be a nice sentiment since weddings are formal and it will remind him of yours whenever he has to wear one. The socks idea is killer as well, because you said you were doing bracelets for your mom so you would match. So matching socks for the dad would be a nice touch.

    Best wishes!

Well, he doesn’t own a tie. Getting him to wear a collared shirt for the wedding has been an adventure in itself. I told him it could even be short sleeved if he wanted (we’re shooting for ‘comfortable, but you’re still going to a wedding’ for our dress code). He straight up said “well, you know all my ‘nice’ shirts are from the 70’s...” Oh yeah, Dad, I’m well aware.

I think I’ll look more into the socks.

If he's super practical maybe a keychain Swiss army knife? They come in handy and can even be personalized and come in a ton of colors, they sell them on amazon, walmart, even bed, bath and beyond. I think the personalized ones need to be ordered from victorinox.

This would be perfect for you guys. It’s an engraved wallet insert with a heart cut out of it and then you can attach the heart to your bouquet or make it a keychain or necklace!

Perhaps something he would wear that says either father of the bride or #1 dad stuff. Doesn't have to wear the gift to the wedding so theoretically a T-shirt could be nice for a memory. (Check Wish app for dad shirts see if anything catches your eye)

I'm getting each of my parents a frame like this one. She will customize the writing to say whatever you like. Etsy shop is PhotoFrameOriginals
