Father in Wheelchair - alternate to father/daughter dance

Private User, on October 26, 2015 at 10:16 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 7

Hi! I am hoping to get some advice/ suggestions as to what can be done in lieu of a father/daughter dance. I am getting married next July. My fiance and I are having some difficulty determining what I can do with my dad instead of a dance since he is in a wheelchair. He has been for quite some time and we have already found a solution to him walking me down the aisle but have yet to figure out what to do instead of the father/ daughter dance. Suggestions? I want my fiance and his mother to do a dance. Just because I can't have that exact moment doesn't mean he shouldn't/

Please help!

Hi @Private User ~ bumping this up Smiley smile

Have you asked your father what he might like to do with you in lieu of the dance?

I have not asked him. We are very close and I know his response will either be that's it's up to me or we don't need to worry about it. I would like to do something though.

I can't really think of anything at the moment, but just wanted to bump this for you. I do like @LMac's suggestion of presenting a special gift to him.

Who says a person can't dance in a wheelchair? It's about sharing a special song with your dad. I would be touched to see you holding hands and swaying to the music, pushing him to the beat or anything else you decide to do. You and your dad deserve that moment too.

I have thought of using a song and slideshow. A special gift or toast may be nice. I'm not thrilled with the idea of swaying to a song only because my dad is young and fully capable. He simply is confined to a wheelchair from a virus in his spine. When I think of swaying to a song I hate to say but I imagine an elderly sick person. Also I don't want to get to sentimental because it's a happy time!

I'm not suggesting you dance like this with your father, of course, but I hope this will inspire you to see what is possible.

If you go on youtube and search for 'father daughter dance wheelchair' you'll find some different ideas for dances.

Is there anything that you and your dad share that you could do? If he taught you or coached you in any sports, you could play catch, or shoot a basket (you could probably use a wastebasket hoop - thing).
