Father Daughter Dance Timing

nikkigetsmarried2, on January 28, 2009 at 3:30 PM Posted in Planning 0 3

My dad wants to have the first dance with me at my wedding, but it's very imporatant to me that my new husband have that privelage. My dad agreed to my way, but I still want to make sure the daddy/daughter dance is a significant moment. I love my dad so much and really want to honor him on my wedding day. Very old tradition says that the dad dances first, but no one really does that anymore. Help, please!!

In my experience, Dad's sometimes feel a little left out or a little sad because their baby girl is starting a new life (with a new name =)

Traditionally, the Bride and Groom are announced for their grand entrance and go right into their first dance together. The father/daughter dance usually comes later in the evening.

However, for situations such as these, I suggest the following:

Have the DJ announce your father onto the dance floor for the father/daughter dance just after your 1st dance as husband and wife. Have dad make a sentimental speech to you and your husband while the 3 of you are up there together.

He can give you a hug and kiss, then shake your FH hand, maybe with a hug too! Then your FH will take a seat, the DJ will take the mic and your father/daughter dance will begin!

Your Dad will feel very special, honored and this will start the celebration off in a very touching way!

    Good Luck and Congratulations!

More times than not we have the daddy/daughter dance directly following the couple's first dance, then the mother/son dance right after the daddy/daughter dance. This seems to work out really well, and the dad gets his own special dance with his "little girl."

Have you picked out a song yet? There are a few new songs out that are SO SO cute! One is "Down The Road" by Kenny Chesney. The other one is "It Won't Be Like This For Long" by Darius Rucker. They're both country. You can listen to both of them here:

I always love to hear what others choose for their special dances! Smiley smile

Would it be strange to have the first dance right when we enter, eat, and then the dance with my dad first thing after the cake cutting?
