Father-Daughter Dance Song

Kylene, on May 27, 2014 at 7:12 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

I am really struggling with picking a song for the father-daughter dance. My mom and dad divorced when I was five so I haven't lived with him for most of my life. He travels a lot for work so while he's around and every important to me, I don't have the same closeness or connection a lot of people have. I've always wanted to use Butterfly Kisses as my song but it just doesn't fit us and unfortunately it just isn't the right choice. I've gone through so many songs and am just not feeling any.

What songs are you guys using?

I also thought about giving him the option to pick the song. He said that if he did he would pick the same song he chose for my sister's wedding which is Somewhere Out There from An American Tale. This is totally a song from our childhood and would be pretty cute ... I may just go with that but looking for other ideas too!

Well my Dad and I had the same problem, he wanted an instrumental and nothing sappy. No words can perfectly describe our relationship although we have a lot of love. So… a song that always reminded me of him is the song by Christopher Cross "Sailing" so I found a nice instrumental version of it that we're going to dance to. I went through hundreds of songs before deciding, it was quite a chore, I totally get where you're coming from. I would use a different song than from your sister's wedding, make it special for just the two of you whatever it may be.

I'm in the same boat as both of you and have absolutely no idea what song I'll do for the father-daughter dance-or how I'm going to do the dance with my dad AND my step-dad. Good lord. But I do agree with Rachey, it's cute that Somewhere Out There is from your childhood but I don't think it would be fair for you and your sister if you had the same song... is there another one from An American Tale you can do?

I have no idea - I actually just hired a band and am going to talk to my dad tomorrow about picking a song. I'm very interested to see what the thinks and what he picks.

I'm dancing w. my dad to Natalie Grant's "Always be your Baby"... I liked it because it's more of a bride to her dad (as much as I LOVE "Butterfly Kisses" and "I Loved her First", they're more meant as a dad singing to his daughter).

@Lindsay- I was trying to figure out a way to dance formally w. my stepdad, and not take anything away from my dad- FH and I decided that after Father/daughter and mother/son dances, we will call my brothers and stepdad and his sisters to the dance floor and dance with them. We'll have the DJ say something like "The bride and the groom would like to share a special dance with other individuals who have had a huge impact on their lives" We thought it was a good compromise.

It was hard to find a song that didn't have some sort of FOB-groom competitiveness (I loved her first? stealing Cinderella?). My dad was determined to find a song that was not a competition.

Then I found this little gem. And it is by "the boss" (one of my dad's favs).

My daughter has loved Butterfly Kisses since it first came out, so that's what she is using. However, I found this song a while ago and just love it. Would love to incorporate it into her wedding somehow. Hope you all enjoy.

We're dancing to Fly Me to the Moon. I've known since middle school that that would be the song we danced to.

There is sentimental reasons why I'm using this song but I am using "Walking in Memphis," by Marc Cohn.

My father requested "Till There Was You" by The Beatles, and I love it. It is sentimental for us, but would work for anyone, especially a first born. Sweet serenade, short, easy, soo loving. It's originally from a musical, maybe The Music Man?

There were birds, in the trees

But I never heard them singing

No I never heard them at all

    Till there was you.

My dad really liked Butterfly Kisses when I was little, until he heard I LOVED YOU FIRST. That songs doesn't talk about the daughter growing up like Butterfly Kisses.
