Father Daughter Dance song when relationship is strained.

Nicole, on February 20, 2018 at 4:56 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 7
Hi! My daughter has been estranged from her bio father for the most part since she was 13 by her choice. The past few years she’s been cordial and polite for her much younger siblings sake that are too young to remember how horrible he had become to me and our two older children. She is VERY close to her stepdad, calling him Dad and plans to have the song Daddy by Abby ? for their dance because he loved her like a father should, was always there for her and taught her what a husband should be. My daughter is an angel and despite her bio dad being a bum she doesn’t want to hurt him but she doesn’t want a song that is meaningless to her either. She is stumped on how to honor him for giving her life and finally letting her go when she asked, but not look like a witch for having a beautiful song for stepdad and treating biodad like a sperm donor. We really need suggestions.

If she doesn't want to dance with biodad, she really shouldn't feel like she has to. Maybe she could let him give a short toast instead of having multiple father-daughter dances where she is worried about people comparing them?

How about "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" by Iz? None of the lyrics talk about fatherhood, but they're positive.

I think that if she wants to honor both dads, have them both walk her down the aisle and just have the father daughter dance with her step dad.

It sounds like there are two daddy daughter dances at the wedding? I have a strained relationship with my dad so I'm not doing the dance at all. I feel like, her wanting to have a dance with him at all despite their relationship is an honor. She could also have her bio dad walk her down the aisle and her stepdad have the dance. Or have her bio dad give a speech instead of a dance. Just thoughts.

I agree with Rosie he can be apart of the giving away part by both her step dad and bio dad and have the meaningful dance with her step dad. I say having biodad in the wedding even in a small way is a big deal and all friends and family that are aware of the strained relationship will see that she made an effort to include him and won't think anything of the dance.

Maybe after a minute or so her bio dad can cut in? I really feel a song/the dance shouldn't be forced just for appearance sake.

Just following for responses. My FH has a very strained relationship with his mom and we have been going back and forth about them doing their dance at all. Everyone in the family knows the deal and it just seems very fake. The relationship isn’t good so to force the dance and pretend it’s something it’s not feels very....unnatural and awkward. But we’re also not trying to disrespect the woman who gave him life either. It’s very tough.
