Father /daughter dance song - is this too icky?

August skies, on June 24, 2016 at 12:09 AM Posted in Planning 0 13

Sorry for the click -baity title, but yeah.... I really want to use 'Brown Eyed Girl' by Van Morrison as the song my dad and I dance to. I always remember my dad listening to it and singing it to me when I was little. But it's not a father daughter kind of love, is it too sexual? Can DJs edit parts out? I'm also open to other suggestions but I want to stay with that time period, he really likes that kind of music.

I guess I have never listened to certain verses enough to get a sexual feeling out of it. I always liked the chorus and the song as a whole.

However, if the word "icky" even enters your mind when thinking of it as a father/daughter song, I guess it should be a pass.

Well, I just read the lyrics. The first few verses are alright, but here's the last one:

"So hard to find my way,

Now that I'm all on my own.

I saw you just the other day,

    My how you have grown,

Cast my memory back there, Lord

    Sometime I'm overcome thinking 'bout

Making love in the green grass

    Behind the stadium with you

    My brown eyed girl

    You're my brown eyed girl"

Full disclosure -- I'm big on lyrics. The very first thing that popped into my head when I saw your song choice was, "Making love in the green grass behind the stadium with you". Again, that's just me. If you're going to use it, tell your DJ to edit out that last verse, play the bridge a few times...whatever he needs to do.

It's not super terrible, but it's aimed at a romantic love. But it always pops up in list suggestions for father daughter dances so I wanted to see what other people thought.

That's what I was thinking, I wasn't sure if DJs could edit songs like that, I have no experience with DJs. I also want to see if he can cut down 'Simple Man' by Shinedown do FH can use it for his dance with his mom. It's quite long for a dance.

It depends on the DJ but they could fade it out or something at the very least.

My dad loves Van Morrison too! I skipped over brown eyed girl because I have blue eyes and it just didn't fit. I'm using Van Morrison " have I told you lately" instead, I've reviewed the lyrics and there is nothing icky in that one. Give it a listen and see what you think of that one.

Icky. Just end the dance before the third verse. What if your DJ fails to do the edit, for whatever reason? Talk about awkward

Maybe just do the song instrumental?

Gosh, I never even knew that line was in there! As a guest, I would have thought it was cute Lol. But now that I know... I cannot un-know...

@VC's idea is a good one!

You shouldn't be dancing to the entire song anyways, that's REALLY long, usually 1-2 minutes is all a DJ would recommend, so just cut the song out before the last "icky" verse

I looked at the timing of this song, and the awkward verse starts just after two minutes into the song, so I think you could easily have the DJ fade out. People will start to tune out if your special dances are too long anyway, so it will probably work out pretty well :-) I think it's a fun song and will make the moment happy and special for you, as the song seems to have a lot of meaning and memories attached to it.
