Father Daughter Dance / brother sister dance song

Serenity, on August 22, 2013 at 12:59 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

My dilema begins here. My dad was not part of my life growing up because my mother and him had their differences due to divorce. I know it shouldnt have stopped him from seeing me but it is what it is. As an adult he has been activley part of my life and we have become really close. Since my mother passed away my dad is now giving me away at my wedding. I also have an older brother (not from the same dad) who I want to honor at the wedding too. He was the only man in my life growing up and at the wedding somehow and I thought if I had the father daughter dance and 1/2 way thru the song my dad could hand me to my brother that would be a great way to acknowlege him. I just dont know what an appropriate song i could use to dance to with both of them. Any suggestions?

My cousin did this with her father and step father - She had her stepfather (second to dance w/ her) "cut in" on the father/daughter dance and the whole song changed as well...

She only used a selection of each song - one I know was the Brad Paisley song about the stepdad and child ... ugh can't remember the name right now...and I can't remember the first but it was very traditional father/daughter song.

It worked well and it was cute.

My son is doing something similar with my and my FH's first dance - if he wants to - he is just going to come up and cut in part way through the song (my mom/dad will tell him when it's his time)...and we can dance as a family or he can dance w/ just me...

    Thank you Mrs. Future P.

I am trying not to hurt anyones feelings and I think the having the song change will work for us. I will run it by our DJ. Great advise.

It's just sooo hard to find a father daughter song that is fitting for my dad and I. Everything is based on him being my hero or being there when I was younger and well...that wasnt the case.

I wanted to dance a song with my brother that would honor our mother since she passed. It's too bad that we cant change the Luther Vandross dance with my father to dance with my mother. I would love that.

Thank you again for the suggestion. I really do appreciate it.

    Serenity -

    You are so welcome!

Try listening to the song "Just Fishin' " by Trace Atkins...it fit me and my dad perfectly and he also wasnt and still isn't home a lot due to his job. So the songs like I loved her first or my little girl weren't right for us either.

It may give you inspiration for another song. I also love the classic songs from people like Van Morrison, Vandross, George Benson, Marvin Gaye...Van Morrison has a lot of good songs that would work for either dance.

Did you check out the song page on WW? Sometimes they have great suggestions for those non-traditional dances that are done.

    Hi Serenity

I was just listening to my iPod and I thought of another song for your father/daughter brother/sister dance -

I am a country fanatic so 99% of my suggestions will come from that genre - but it may give you inspiration...

    Drive - Alan Jackson

Again, its a song about memories vs "the i loved her first" type of theme

Also, if you are going to be active on the boards you might want to change your avitar (the rings) to something the WW ladies can remember you by.

I did this. Not because my dad was not in my life because he was/is. He is an amazing life, but growing up he and my mom worked several jobs to give us what we needed or wanted and my brother watched us. As I grew up he was always the one to drive me around and do stuff with me. However, I never intended to dance with him, but as my dad and I were balling on the dance floor I saw my brother crying to so I motioned for him to come dance with me too. It just felt right dancing with him too for the father daughter dance.

Why not pick two different songs. You can choose something meaningful for each dance. If your brother is anything like mine, you may want to choose a fun song, something from your time growing up. Just a thought.
