Fast First Dance Song

Jacinda, on August 30, 2018 at 12:44 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11

I know traditionally the first dance song is slow and romantic, but "our song" is more fast paced. Even before we got engaged I kept imagining us doing an amazing choreography and dancing to that song in front of everyone! I am so excited to take lessons with my FH and work on building the choreography together. Smiley smile

Also, after attending a couple weddings with a slow first dance song, I felt like it dragged on and the dance was not interesting. I know we would both feel awkward simply swaying for that long while everyone watched.

Would it be weird to have a fast dance for our first dance? Is anyone else considering it?

Definitely not weird it's unique and will probably entertain your guests more than them just watching you twirling slowly

That's exactly what we're doing! We'll be making up a funny dance. We're going to start with a slow song and then have it suddenly switch to the fast, fun one!

Hi Jacinda! Welcome to the WeddingWire community, we're happy to have you! A fast-paced first dance song with a choreographed dance sounds like a really fun idea! I don't think it would be weird at all, and if it's not you and your future husband's style to have a slow dance then a fast-paced song might be more appropriate. It's your special day and whatever you think is best is what you should do! Many other couples in the community have chosen to use a fast-paced song, and you may get some ideas from this conversation by other members on their favorite reception dance songs. Is there any particular genre you and your future husband like to listen to?

I think it's cool! We are considering a faster country song, so we can swing dance.

My BFF and her husband were announced, then walked in to "Happy" by Pharrell and danced to that. It was really cute.

We didn't like the idea of everyone having to stare at us swaying for almost 4 minutes so we discussed with our DJ and we are doing until the 2nd chorus and then he is mixing in one of our favorite fast songs which will get our bridal party and the rest of our friends that the party is starting and everyone will get to the dance floor. We did let our bridal party and close friends know this is happening so they know to get their butts on the dance floor, if they want of course!

I am not a fan of choreographed first dances, unless you are professional dancers or are doing a slower dance like a waltz or something similar.

We like alternative rock mostly. The song we are considering for our first dance song is by an alternative band that we both love and we were able to see them live this summer, which made us love them even more! The song is fun and it fits our relationship really well.

There are some slow dance songs we would like to do, but we would prefer to have them come up throughout the night and have other couples dance to them too rather than all eyes on us for the slow dance.

Not weird, we are going a mash up. A fast song then end with another slower song, but NOT slow. And we will only be dancing to that part for about 2 minutes. We are definitely not dancing to a whole single song. The mash up is probably also 2 minutes. It can be long and awkward and i want to avoid that

I think a fast paced first dance would be an awesome way to set off a fun party atmosphere, Jacinda!!! What's the title of the song you want to dance to?

It's "Shut Up and Dance" by Walk The Moon. We both really love the song and never get sick of it no matter how many times we hear it (though I am worried that will start to happen when we play it over and over to get our choreography right, haha). I think it describes our relationship really well. He tends to be the more serious one, especially at the beginning of our relationship he always wanted to talk about the future whereas I was more "don't worry about all that, let's just enjoy being together right now." Now of course that we've been together a while and are engaged I'm thinking about the future too, but in the beginning our attitudes definitely aligned with the lyrics to the song so it sort of brings back fond memories of when we started dating and I was just enjoying the thrill of getting to know him. Smiley smile
