Farm table seating??

Hi ladies! Any tips about seating arrangements for long, farm-style tables (some may be up to 20 guests per table)? I don’t want to pre-set the tables with escort cards, but will it get confusing for that many people to select their own seats at a big table? And I don’t love escort cards but think it might be necessary so that people can more easily relocate their seats at a big table after dancing etc.

Any ideas are appreciated!

We had three very long farmhouse style tables. Each "table" sat around 40 people. We still had a seating chart, by table number. We had table numbers in the middle of each actual table (that sat about 8 people) and did place cards at each individual setting.

We had long tables but they were individual tables pushed together and we labeled them as such. Each table sat 8 and had a table number and guests were assigned a table number via escort cards.

We are having farmhouse tables but are doing escort cards because we have a plated meal and it makes it much easier for the servers. I'd recommend escort cards if you are pushing all your tables together and just having a long row - they're actually more beneficial than you think!

I've been to weddings with round tables where guests were assigned a table but then just sat themselves and were not given escort cards. I've always found that if you didn't claim your seats and either leave something behind or leave someone to guard them you often ended up with the couples seated irregularly and then a couple split up on opposite sides of the table and had to rearrange the seats and glasses afterward. Escort cards are nice because it's obvious when a seat is "taken" and other guests can sit themselves in a logical fashion based on the seats that have been claimed.
