I really want to have a family style wedding reception opposed to food stations. I'm lost about what food to have my caterer prepare. My budget is $1,000.00 for 50 people. Should it be full courses or a bunch of different hors d'oeuvres? I kind of like the idea of adding different ethnic foods. it...

ideas please.

Dying at the example of olive garden as a "decent meal" for a wedding. I mean, sure it works. But, don't you want to say thanks to your guest with something delicious and not just decent?

Uhmmm, Olive Garden is nationwide. That's not a good example of how cheap everything is in Oklahoma.

It think for dishes you know your guests. What kind of food would they like.

If you are thinking ethnic, it still depends how ethnic and is it any good.

You can do some chinese food but most likely it will be westernized chinese food like fried rice and noodles etc.

Meat dishes would obviously work well as you can use the noodles/rice as the starches. I don't know many meat dishes for family style that would work; tenderloins and meat medallions, carved meats.

Goodness Gracious I never said Olive Garden was proper wedding food I said it was a restaurant with decent food that could get you a plate under $20.

Dude people on here are mean lol @Starla I get you and am sorry people are so abrasive. My friend had a great pasta meal at her wedding and it was very affordable. She had two types of noodles, a red sauce and white sauce, huge yummy salad and garlic bread. So good.

Good luck and I am sure it will be amazing, don't listen to the haters. Also you're smart for not blowing 30K on a meal that most will not remember.

Do whatever kind of food you want! I knew when I saw the topic that people were going to post rude comments. But it isn't their weddings so they don't have to worry about it.

@Katie That's so funny that you said that because I heard months ago from a Facebook group that the people on here were a little opinionated. It's OK though I actually enjoyed myself. I thought it was entertaining, and I wish them the best on their weddings they obviously have it all figured out which is awesome.

Italian food is great family style! I would do a pasta dish, some chicken parm, maybe veal franchese.

Or go latin with arroz con pollo.

ETA: I'm a terrible speller and put veal franchise! hahaha

Ask the caterer what her specialty is or what her favorite meals to cook are.

@Starla yes people are very sure of themselves lol. We are doing a BBQ style because we want the food to be chill, yummy and not 'stuffy'. In college I worked for a catering company and it is pretty much impossible to serve a huge group of people a 7 course meal that is going to be perfect for everyone. I would so much rather have homey and delicious food that has been prepared well than a fancy meal with a ton of people. Also most of my friends who have gotten married regret spending all of their money on the wedding. I am so excited to have a beautiful wedding but also buy a gorgeous house soon after. Everyone just has different priorities and none are right or wrong. Smiley smile
