Family Photographer

Hey everyone,
My cousin is going to be the photographer for our wedding. He's not a professional photographer, but he does amazing work that I would say surpasses the quality of a professional. As a gift to us, he's doing this for free. As a thank you gift to him, I was thinking to give him cash and a nice thank you card. My FH was proposing to give home $200, but I was thinking more around $500. Mind you, he's a young "starving artist," and is saving us thousands of dollars. What are your thoughts?

I would do $500 if it's in your budget.

What you decide to gift him is completely up to you. Photography prices can range depending on packages, amount of hours, what else is included (i.e., engagement shoot), etc. If it were me, I’d probably give him $500 between the two prices to show your appreciation for his willingness to cover your day. But again, only you two can decide.

I think $500 or even $350 like others are suggesting is good! Think about how many hours he’s working though and how much editing he’s doing afterwards though. That’s so kind of him to offer! Since you said he’s just getting started professionally maybe you can leave him a nice review on here or wherever he’s advertising his business so he hopefully can star booking other weddings too!

If it's in your budget and you feel his work surpasses professionals, I would definitely give him the $500.

As someone who has been in his position, if he has done a wedding or two before, I would give him 200 day of and 300 after you receive the photos and like them. If he is super experienced a little more, if hes young and not that experienced, maybe a little less. If it’s not in your budget, since he offered for free, something like 350 and a really nice letter, maybe take him out to dinner. It really all depends: does he have a price he usually charges, or no?
