Family Member Officiating

Leslie, on June 19, 2019 at 4:09 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 12

My fiancee and I decided to ask her brother officiate our wedding, since we're not religious and we're having a small intimate wedding. He's not a professional and I don't think he would accept money for doing this. Does anyone else have a friend/family member officiating? What are other appropriate gifts for them?

You could write a nice thank you card with a gift card to his favorite restaurant or store.

Yep...we are doing a thank you note and a gift card so he can take his wife to a nice dinner!

We had my Godfather officiate. He's a pretty silly guy, so we got him a custom made bobblehead of his head on a body in a priest's robes. We also bound our ceremony script into a hardcover book with pictures of us in there and a special thank you page for him.

We’re planning to ask a close friend to officiate for us, my FH mentioned it to him and he has officiated a couple weddings previously. We are thinking about getting him a pair of club level tickets to a Rockies game since he loves baseball and maybe something else small.

My brother is officiating and we're getting him a $100-$150 gift card and will get a gift that he would have gotten as a groomsman (since he would have been asked to be one if he wasn't officiating). We're still figuring out what that will be, but probably a nice watch.

We have a good friend officiating. Him and his wife (my MOH) have a 9 month old. We’ve asked our photographer to grab them at one point in the night to take a family portrait while they’re all dolled up. We have a nice frame and am gifting them a print of their family portrait.

We’re having FH’s cousin’s husband officiate the wedding; he’s a pastor. We just got him a nice bottle of whiskey with a proposal tag on it.

We are having my brother officiate our wedding. We are not religious either, and we feel as though this would make it more personal. We haven't quite figured out what we will do for him since he wouldn't accept money either.

So far it looks like this is the route we’re taking! I’ll have to ask my fiancée if there’s any particular restaurants they enjoy

I did not even think of this, my MOH has a three month old and would love this gift!
