Family garter

Sarah, on October 31, 2017 at 5:45 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17

I didn't even know this was a thing. My FSIL offered that I could wear her garter. I was emailing with my Mum the other day and mentioned it and that I didn't even want to wear one, and she wrote back "funny you should mention it, I just asked my cousin where the family garter is"... Apparently she wore it and so have at least 3 other family members.

So I still don't really want to wear one (we're having a DW just with immediate family and going for lunch after courthouse wedding)... But is it really so expected? Is a family garter a thing in other families?!?

My mom has my Granny's garter that she wore in 1959. She asked me if I wanted to wear it (she didn't care) and I said "hell no." It had been in a scrapbook for 60 years, and as much as I love my Granny, I have plenty of other sentiment for the day of.

I didn't know it was a thing until I got engaged either

No, but my MIL asked if she could make mine. They were gorgeous.

I hope not. May parents have been married 40 years and my mother didn't wear a garter. (Or toss a bouquet). I've never seen a garter tossed, in person, in 2 dozen weddings. I've been involved in 3 other wedding parties and those brides didn't wear garters.

I personally never heard of a family garter but did hear about wearing a family heirloom, so maybe the garter is an heirloom for your family as well. I dont know if I would want to wear a garter that was worn by my family members previously.

Any feminine undergarment that would, instead of being disposed of, be stored (after usage) next to a woman's bras, panties, and stockings doesn't fit into "family" anything.

One garter per thigh. A family ring is worth passing down -- after all, a finger is a finger and an upper thigh, ahem...is an upper thigh. Family reunions don't thrive under the gown.

I sort of have one... my great grandmother made garters for my mom and her sister when they each got married. Since then my mom saved it and my aunt couldn't find hers when my cousin was married so she borrowed my mom's. I was planning on wearing it as my something old, borrowed, and blue (it has blue ribbon) although I'm also wearing blue shoes. I hadn't thought of it as being weird or gross. Should I be reconsidering? Also we are not doing a garter or bouquet toss.

I'm sorry. But that's super gross as a garter is part of your lingerie. I typically don't share my lingerie.

That's super gross- I don't care that it's not "real underwear" but so much gross.

I have not heard of a family garter. I have heard of other family heirlooms for weddings though.

Ok good I'm so glad I'm not the only one who finds it weird!! Like MAYBE if it was just Mum but all these other rellies have worn it too!

Mum's lending me the pearls she also wore so I'm covered on old and borrowed anyway.

Now to let her and FSIL down gently...
